What angle to most of you put on your EDC folders? And why do you choose that particular angle? Just curious.

I like 15 degrees per side for medium quality steel, and 10 degrees per side for top end steel.

"Truck Stop Special" $9.99 per copy knives get 25 degrees per side.:p

The smasller the angle, the better they cut, but the weaker the edge will be if the knife is abused.

My ZDP, M4, S90, Carter Necker, go 13* because 13 can't be unlucky for everyone. It seems to be a good angle for top end steel, the way I use it, which is damn carefully anyway.

S30, VG10, D2, A2, etc. go 18*, and I use them the same way.

I can cut most stuff without edge failure at those angles, although I admit I'm not above micro-beveling slightly when I've been too rough on a blade. I think it's a matter of figuring out what each blade can do without microbeveling.

I will use a knife that has a micro bevel as a "hard service" knife, so I normally carry one of each type. One is kind of to show off an edge, one is used for most cutting.

I'm not yet completely conversant with ZDP 189, so I won't address it here.

CPM M-4, CPM S90V and VG-10 have given me excellent service at 10 degrees per side.

Like you, I use a knife with the same care I use with other precision tools. That is to say, I use it as a knife, not as a hammer, prybar, screwdriver, nail-puller, etc.

Try 10 degrees sometime. I think you'll be pleased with the results!

I've been doing 14 on D2 and 154CM, 9 on ZDP, 18 on AUS8, 420hc/440c are at 20.
Don't own many other types of steels ATM.

Thank you BD, but I use my knives on hard wood and hard plastic at times, and I need that extra amount of durability and edge holding. Even at 13* I get edge deformation and micro chipping occasionally, and it really bothers me to grind some of that stuff back out. I feel like I use my knives up too quickly going lower. I trust it works like magic for some folks, and I do have knives at 10* for times when I'm carrying two knives. :D
