Folder Disassembly

There is a series of books describing how to disassemble and reassemble just about every firearm one could own. Is there a book or series of them for knives?

I am especially interested in folder disassembly and re-assembly.

The only book I'm familliar with for taking apart and re-assembly folders is "The complete book of pocket knife repair" by Ben Kelly Jr. (I think that is correct for the author)

Son,

Thanks, I'll give that a try. A quick search shows it is available almost everywhere.

I bought the book. You were right. It was just what I needed.

It recommended using an old thin kitchen knife and shearing the pin by hammering the kitchen knife between the liner and the blade. Worked like a charm.

Here is a link to the picture of the knife disassembled and partially repaired:

I'm glad it helped. If you are familliar with Usenet groups over on rec.knives (can be reached through google groups) there is a fellow by the name of Alvin Johnston who repairs pocket knives for the fun of it. I know he'd be interested in seeing your work. And it is another resource if you have questions.

What exactly are you doing? I see the photo of the knife before and the knife unassembled.

If you're interested here

can be found a photo of one I made.

I had a dropped connection and don't think this went the first time. If it repeats, sorry.

When I got the knife from my friend, all the old handle material was gone. It needed new scales. I discovered I could not replace them without a total disassembly if I wanted to do it right. So, I had to learn how to take it completely apart, which the book made possible.

Once I got it apart, and removed all the old pin pieces, I used some WD-40 and 600 grit wet/dry paper to clean off lost of oxidation. Then I began shaping the new scales on the disc sander and the belt sander. Next I drilled the holes for the new rivets. I did a slight countersink on the inside to keep the rivet heads from binding the blades when they fold. Then I began shaping the ends to be flush with the bolsters.

I have done all I can on the sanders, I plan to do the rest of the shaping, sanding and polishing with a Dremel tool and by hand.

Your folder is cool. I have never made one from scratch, and this is the first one I am repairing.

I will check out rec.knives. Thanks for the info.

I really appreciate you recommending the Kelly book. Others made some recommendations that just did not work, but the book had some very useful information in it that made it possible to finish this project.
