Folder or Fixed

I am sure this question is asked a lot, but some people have told me that folders are not as good for self defense as fixed blades. Currently I carry a Benchmade Stryker. I have looked at the Benchmade fixed blade (I can't remember how to spell its name) and I am trying to see some Newt Livesay knives. What are some other good fixed blades for around a hundred dollars? I would like one with an IWB Kydex sheath or at have on made for it.

Thanks for any info.

You might be able to find a good, "used" Cold Steel Tanto for well under $100 by placing an ad here at the "Knives Wanted" section ...I just found a "like NEW" Cold Steel Recon Scout for $90, including priority shipping, that's on its' way to me!.

I am not a Knife Fighter, if I were I would prefer a knife with a double edge. I have always liked and I do own a Boker A/F #12, I also like SOG's S25 Desert Dagger, both are right about $100.

Play nice

If you are going to carry a fixed blade concealed (or displayed), be Very aware of the legalities in your part of the world.

You are thinking of the BM Nimravus. There are several other production knives under $100 which would make good coices. Look at Fallkniven's selections. Livesay makes great knives for the price. The Bud Nealy model made by Boker would be another good economical choice. For another hundred or so, you could get one of the Bud Nealy 'customs' with a nine position magnetic carry sheath.

A couple of aphorisms that get tossed around here fairly liberally:

-The strongest folder is a fixed blade

-The best self defense knife is whichever one you happen to have with you when the feces hits the fan

The takeaway here is that in almost any situation a fixed blade is preferrable to a folder in a self defense situation. But conversely, that fixed blade will do you no good on the street if it's sitting at home in a drawer. Take this for what it's worth.

Beyond that, the BM Nimravus (which you may have been thinking of) has developed a pretty solid reputation around here. Glockman's suggestion is a good one as well. You might also want to consider that for not too much more money you'd be in the range of a true custom from Ed Schott made out of a premium steel like CPM-3V. Food for thought.
