Folder or Multi-tool, if you could only carry one?

It seems to me that even a good folder is not
as useful as a multi-tool. It goes without saying that the blades on multi-tools leave something to be desired, but I think it is better to have a second-rate blade with a pliers, saw, file, screwdrivers, scissors and can opener than only one high quality blade.

On a daily basis, certainly the blade is used the most and it makes sense to want that to be the strongest part, but to me if I had to carry a LM Wave or a CRK Sebenza I would take the Wave every time. Obviously the BG 42 on the Sebbie buries the blade of the Wave, but ever try tightening a bolt with a Sebbie?
For overall usefullness, IMHO, the multi-tool takes the cake, especially the Wave.

That's my $.02, what do you think?

Hi!

I think that folder is better than a multi-tool.
In my opinion folder with single blade is
stronger and more comfortable.
When i could carry only one ----> i choose folder.

This was my 2 cents.

Well it always seems when I need my multitool, the Swiss Tool by the way, that I had left it at home! But when I do carry it I also carry other folding knives as well.
The blades on the Swiss tool cut very well, and I've no complaints regarding the quality, the other folders I carry can be opened quicker and easiery than the Swiss Tool or the Wave, I've handled the Wave and it is handy to have the knives available to thumb open but I like a folder for everyday cutting.

hmmmm that's about .03 cents worth, sorry bout that!

I think that if I ad to make a choice of either a multitool or a folder, only, I think I would have to choose the multitool simply because it is more utilitarian and versatile. I wouldn't like to make the decision and if I could I would take both.

Bucky,
First of all let me say welcome to the forums, and second I'm gonna have to stick with the folder. Although I carry a Wave everyday what if you were attacked or something, I would rather have my Kershaw Blackout there than anything else. Lately at night there has been a guy harrassing and following women around my apartment complex so getting attacked is a very real possibilty. My wife never goes out after dark without me and I never go ANYWHERE unarmed. I understand that having the pliers and scissors is VERY nice but I'm sticking to the tactical folder.--Mykl

I would say carry a multi-tool or sak if your planning to do alot of other jobs besides cutting and only can carry one blade.

Welcome to the forums.

Folder. I rarely need any of the other tools so much that I would never take a multi-tool over a folder. Even when not restricted, I rarely carry a multi-tool due to the weight (I do have a set of flat screwdrivers on my keyring, and a Benchmade Torx kit, though). I have yet to encounter a situation where a multi-tool was all that was available and was truly necessary enough to choose it over a knife. Sure, there have been times when I wished I had one with me, but never to the point where I wished I had one more than I was glad I did have a knife.

Mykl,
Maybe you need to work on your tactical pliers fighting skills a bit. The originator of the art (his name is Moe) demonstrates in a series of short films in the 30s and 40s how a firm grip on the nose with a pliers, wrench, or scissors can completely incapacitate an opponent and make him yelp in pain. He also has a number of other unusual techniques that are always very effective.
