I'm wanting to put together a "Build Day" for a Boy Scout troop building a folder. I'll probably be buying 10-15 kits and I'm looking for sources and suggestions as to the build. I've built fixed blades but folders.....well lets say I'll be learning along the way with the boys. Ages will be 11-17 so you can see I need something simple but want the end product to be useable. The idea of something traditional that works with the Boy Scout theme is what I'm aiming for, probably 2 blades 3" or smaller. Any ideas or sources? Suggestions for teaching this type of build? TIA

If you google "knife kits" you'll find something. I dasn't mention any non-member vendor names.

I have built several Rough Rider Stockman from their kits. They make a Stockman, Trapper and several lock backs as well. They cost about $9. I also built a Laguiole from a RR kit. If you search for Rough Rider dealers you will find them.

I'll second the Rough Rider kits. I've seen them on the "big a" site, but have not bought one yet.

The RR kits are pretty great and very inexpensive. The 2 stockmen i made came with very roughed out wood scales, and the blades were not fully ground so they were not sharp.
It does take a bit of trickery to get them all together with the backsprings. I recently got a trapper pattern but have yet to build it.
The most recent build was a "Laguiole" pattern that was the easiest to build and the blade was sharpened. It was pretty much an hour or less to put it together.
The one lockback I built was the easiest because you don't have the resistance from the backsprings.

I will post some pics later today.

I'll second the lockback suggestion, you can usually put the blade pin in while squeezing the lock with your fingers as opposed to needing a vise to compress the springs on traditionally sprung knives. It'll save you from a lot of cracked covers and frazzled nerves.

I don't have a suggestion but I do think this is a cool thing for scouts to do!!! Keep up the good work with them. Do they still have to have whittling chits to carry a knife?
