Recently an AL Mar SERE was stabbed into a phonebook and it was damaged, this is actually being defended by several people. So from Swamp Rat's viewpoint, is stabbing the Rat Trap folder into a phonebook abusive and outside the scope of work of the folder.

I don't have an answer for you as I am not Swamp Rat, but I am interested in finding out what kind of damage the SERE took.

Thanks

thats a good question. i know Eric has said before that the rat trap was not Designed to heavy duty user. I am not sure how that fits stabbing it into a phonebook.

Saying that i do not own one yet.. hopefully soon.

Just curious what kind of damage happened on the sere? I have one and it's a great cutter, but I've never tested its toughness. I'd put it and the rat trap together as efficient cutting machines, but not heavy duty by any means. I normally feel that abuse is any damage intentionally afflicted on a knife outside it's scope of work. Like are you stabbing it into the phonebook to see how long it takes for damage to occur, or stabbing it into the phonebook for a purpose other than inflicting damage. Good luck with your tests.

I do a lot of phone book stabbing in general to benchmark penetration of various knives. I don't consider it a test of durability the only knives I would be concerned about doing it with are fillet blades and similar as they are not rigid enough and could bend significantly and thus crack under a prying load.

The SERE is promoted as one of the strongest tactical folders in existance, their words. I find the fact that it makes this claim and then the damage on phone book stabbing is defended is laughable. The Rat Trap isn't a heavy duty knife, but it isn't like this needs a heavy duty profile or lock.

I seriously doubt it would be considerd abuse, remember it's your warranty!

Recently someone on the Rat forum snapped the blade of a Trap by using it to try to pry an inch and a half thick sheet of ice off of his porch.

Eric told him to send it in for replacement/repair.

I think it was abusive in that the knife was not designed or intended for that kind of work. Outside the scope of the warrenty?...apparently not....

The Rat Trap is designed to be a light to medium duy folder and was not designed for heavy impacts but rather designed to excell at slicing.

However, as has been stated if there was any warranty issues, you as the customer, could decide if it should be covered or not.

:D:D

I would consider stabbing phone books heavy duty for a folder. In the realm of testing though, it is reasonable and not cruel or unusual. Cliff, if you do it, it makes sense and I would value your opinion. If I did it, I would probaly visit the nice people at the ER room.
