2. What size blade do you prefer? Under 3"? 3.5"ish?
3. Any particular cutting tasks outside of normal everyday/work tasks that you need the toughness?
Chances are you looking for M390, M4, Cru-wear, or Maxamet steel.

There's no such animal. Brittleness and hardness go hand in hand.I'm looking for something with extreme high hardness that's not super brittle
Maxamet is going to be super brittle. At least in my experience it was
I’ve had good luck with a Spyderco Stretch 2 in ZDP-189. Mine has shown to corrode fairly quickly, but polishes up easy enough.
I don’t have enough time with S110v yet to be fully confident on how it performs, but it seems a bit more ready to chip than ZDP.
ZDP-189 is also another steel that stays sharp and keeps cutting for a long time.
The ZDP-189 is going to take longer to sharpen than the Rex45 though. Rex45 is a breeze and a pleasure to bring back to sharp ad the Rex45 is going to be a little tougher, hold it's sharpness and not micro chip like I've experienced in the ZDP steel.
Man you got me wanting to grab another Spyderco with Rex45! It sounds like a steel I’d really enjoy as well.
Christmas list completed!
It's a user-grade steel for sure. I've been happy with it over all the other steels I've used before. I cut with it all day long and at the end of the day, it's still sharp!
