i am interested in a folder that can hold an edge and has an extremely strong and dependable lock. the knife would be used for light prying but mostly for situations where a jungle survival would be necessary i already have several cold steel knives which i dont really care for. i also have several large fixed blades including swamp rat, becker, tops and blackjack. i want a folder to complement my large fix blades. the knives that have caught my eye are the benchmade with the axis locks ,model 710/806 with the g10 handles and the spyderco manix/military which of these models would you suggest i get?

I have the Para-Military and it is a lovely knife. I think it is rather strong and dependable. The Military would be the same as its just bigger

for survival I would go with a Larger Military.

I dont think any folding Tanto blade would be good for survival. Maybe killing animals but that could be done with a branch or rocks

I'm not a fan of prying with a knife but the manix should hold up . The tip is nice and stout and wont break uff as easily as the military.

I have been useing the BM 710 with the M2HS blade for well over a year now and am very impressed. It has been used on moose, halibut, caribou, wood, rope (poly and natural), and holds it edge very well. When it looses the sharpness I like, a few passes on a diamond hone and I'm back in buisness.

It might be worth checking out the Al Mar SERE 2K (which was designed for the Army SERE school), or the Swamp Rat Rat Trap (which is as tough as their fixed blades).

Since you mentioned light prying I'll recommend a benchmade 720-722: They're built like tanks, a little smaller, and I'd rather pry with a 720 than an 806. The 806 would be a great choice though.

Remember prying WILL void your Benchmade warranty. And most warranties.

I think I'll take the 806 over the 722.

Aluminum handles really suck when it's cold out. :D And for some reason or another, I think that D2 will stand up to prying better than 154CM.

I have read the AFCK stands for Advanced Folding Camp Knife, or Advanced Folding Combat Knife, depending on where you see it.

The 722's tip is pretty think though.

It's a toss up between the Axis locks and the Manix. Your grip will fail before either of those locks gives out. The Al Mar, however, can be finicky. I got rid of mine because the liner lock slipped. I'm not a fan of liner locks on heavy duty folders; I much prefer Axis, Compression, or frame locks.

After I wrote that post I pulled out both knives to check. The AFCK is slightly thinner due to the clipped blade, but the bulk of the blade is the same size. I'm sure they're both great ;x

If you plan to pry with it the Chinook II has a thicker tip than the Manix. Both have the same extremely strong lock. The BM 520 is also a very over-built folder that you should check out. I EDC a Manix and a 520 currently and I can't decide which I prefer more, hence I carry both :)

Take a good look at Strider AR and SMF folders. Heavy folders designed for heavy work.
