Folder Sheath.. What do you think?

Darrel, I thought I would see you at the ECCKS, I didn't.
I don't get your question about the belt sheath? I just won a belt sheath at the Empire Knife Club, made by Rick Lupo, it's very neat, it's designed so that when you pull the handle out the knife automatically opens. It's made for a Buck 112, too bad I don't own one. I will use it when I get one.

Ah, this again.

If I'm carrying a knife to be used, then it can hold it's own in my pocket. If it's too fragile and purty, it's at home.

The fewer little pouches and gadgets on my belt, the better. Around techies, the "Inspector Gadget"/"Utility Belt" look is all too common, and all too nerdish. Belt pouches/PDA's/phones/pagers are the pocket protectors (WOW! That's a lot of words that start with "P"!)of the new millenium. Is a fanny pack more or less lame than the utility belt? Personally, I call it a draw and carry a backpack when I don't have the pocket space for my doo dads.

For dress knives, I'd rather see a bail and chain, like a pocketwatch. Dressed to the nines, carrying a thousand dollar knife, with a goofy looking pouch on your dress belt - It just screams "Billy Bob", like wearing cowboy boots with a suit. (Sorry if any of you do that, but unless you're an actual cowboy, it does NOT look cool.)

And if I'm carrying a sheathed knife on my belt, why not carry a fixed knife?

I know there are folks dying for these things, but it's just not my style.

For us folks who always carry a pocket pistol a belt sheath sometimes comes in handy. My left-hand pocket gets the keys, ChapStick, SAK Mini-ChampII, change, and mints. The right-hand pocket gets a Seecamp .32 pistol with the knife-o-the-day clipped to the back of the pocket. The only problem with this arrangement is that if the knife is wide, it will interfere with drawing the gun. A belt sheath allows me to carry a larger knife than I would otherwise carry.

In a cordura sheath, I think the LDC sheath is the best. Horizontal carry, adjustable belt loops, several sizes, and good protection of the knife make it a winner. Also, the fact that it's got two seperate loops (one towards the front and one towards the back of the sheath) is a nice feature. This allows you to position the sheath "over" a belt loop on your pants instead of being forced to position it before or after the pants loop.

HI! I decided A SAK is the way to go. The one drawback was no pocket clip. I hate having to dig around in my pocket through change, keys, lint and whatever else is in there. So I am having Mike Sastre at River City Sheaths design me A horizontal carry, low profile, concealex sheath for it. Stylish and convenient. Ps- I highly reccomend RSS for whatever sheath you need. I had G2 make one up for a WH Spearpoint. I wear it every day and it works perfectly for the purpose. Easy access and no beating on the spare change. I love it.

Hey Senator,
I'd vote for a larger pistol, on the belt!

Personally, I wish I had more belt pouches for my knives. I don't, because I don't like to go out and order them separately, when the clip works well enough. If a pouch came with the knife, I'd be happy!

Depends on the closed length and bulk to me. For something with the dimensions of a Rekat Carnivore, for instance, a concealex breakfront sheath by Mike Sastre is the ticket. Been carrying one for about five months with no problems. Very secure.

For smaller folders, clip or no clip, like the size of the mini-Axis, for instance, they can ride at the bottom of a pocket. What would be nice for smaller folders is a kydex or concealex sheath that houses them in the open position. Don't see too many of these around, and it only seems practical to me for certain situations (like fly fishing or snorkeling). My $.01. Professor.

I'm a clipper myself:
- at work there's the pager, maglite and toolbag/gerber(depending) on the belt already. (And pants

)
- outside work there's cops looking for knife carriers.

I have to agree with 99% of what Brian said, especially since I seldom wear a belt. Other than that, I am kind of leaning towards the pocket sheaths. I like the idea of a clipped sheath for dress knives that stays firmly attached so as to prevent my pocket from becoming worn by frequent use. I am getting to many frayed pockets (damned Sebenza

)!

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

I like to have the option of carrying a folder on the belt or waistband. My strong preference is for a clip rather than a belt loop.
A quick-release mechanism is a real bonus.
I have an old G96 "Quick-draw Boot and Belt Folder". the pouch is open at the top and there is a brass peg that mates with a hole in the butt of the knife (a lock-back)....kinda like a lanyard hole that is not drilled through. There is just enough elasticity in the pouch to allow the thing to be stretched enough to seperate the peg from the hole.....knife comes out easily, but only when you want it.
And there is a boot/belt clip.
Pity the blade steel isn't a bit better so that I could keep using it.

Always wanted to experiment with a Kydex bottom-opening sheath....something that would let the knife be released and to drop into the hand. Would be useful under a zipped up jacket. Could be a bit of a security problem, though.

I like the option of having both, like Elishewitz supplies.

I have always carried larger folders with blade lenghts in the 4inch range. Front pocket carry in this size doesn't work well for me as the knife gets pushed up when sitting or bending. Pocket clips work fine inside the waistband at the small of the back but leave too much of the knife exposed and can also get in the way when sitting.
Horizontal sheaths scream out that your carrying a knife and aren't easily drawn from. I have always liked horizontal carry either strong side or in crossdraw position. I have made several Kydex sheaths of this style that will allow the knife to be worn with or without a belt and with or without a pocket clip. Casual observation on my part has indicated that horizontal carry tends to blend the knife into the belt line also. I'm no expert and my sheaths are rough at best but have worked better for me than any that have been supplied with the knives.
