I recently bought my first new EDC knife in 15 years (haven't carried for a long time). I picked up a CRKT kasper at a gunshow for $40. I wasn't sure if I'd like a "liner lock", but it's grown on me.

My problem with the knife is the handle - I like something with a good grip, and this one just does not feel as secure in my hand.

I also like a heavier knife - I don't care for spyderco's just for the weight - I've just never been happy carrying a lightweight knife.

So, any suggestions for me? My requests:

One-handed open (not sure about assisted open in IN - doesn't seem firmly legal)
Good grip. Whether that's micarta or rubber, I don't care.
Blade length around 3.75" - 4" (a little over is fine)
Heavy and Sturdy
Quality all-around blade steel - no specific uses, just a general tool knife.
Price range roughly $100. A little more is fine.
Partially serrated or plain - either works.
Bigger is better. I have very large hands and don't want a dainty knife.
ETA: I like the idea of the "LAWKS" system on the CRKT - if there's a knife with the above attributes, and a dummy lock, that'd be great too.

Thank you all in advance for the help. I just re-discovered the website, and hope to be around for a while.:D

ok i think ive got just what youre looking for! Kershaw Ken Onion Tactical Blur, Aluminum handle with liner lock (ive got big hands and it fits comfortably)

has a very secure grip thanks to its grip tape(or whatever) that is set into the handle which is hard enough to scratch black granite (with no damage to itself)

Tanto blade (strong tip)

Sharp excellent heat treated partially serrated 440a (thats what ive heard is the steel) its powder coated holds an edge and is easy to sharpen (ive never actually had to* sharpened mine but i keep it sharp just by stropping cardboard)

oh and the best feature it assisted open

i think it nearly 4 inches

price if you search around it can be had within the $60 range without shipping

Wow that was fast!

Thanks guys!

fdd19 - That may be a winner. I'll search around. amazon was my first return for it on google and had it for $60. Good call, thank you!

eta: the blur is just 4.2 oz. The kasper I have now is a little light, and it's 7.4 oz - will have to hold one of those blur's at a show before I jump on it

Its an awesome knife trust me the second you push on the thumb stud youll be hooked :-D actually the knife feels heavier than it actually is because of the aluminum handle trust me youll love it!

Hey I am kinda new here but when I read your post I thought of the Benchmade mini Rukus. I like kives that carry on the slim side. The Mini Rukus is aliitle bulky-for me...but I still want one:) I think that knife feels AWESOME!! in your hand. It may be on the higher side of what you want to spend..but defintely check it out.

Also have a blur. The steel is no longer 440A but Sandvik 13C26. A nice upgrade. You can also get S30V (like I did) and pay a bit extra. Great knife. Perfect size. Smooth action.

Alrighty, I ordered the Blur. Thanks for the suggestion fellas - I look forward to getting it.

Slimman - I was looking at the Rukus as well;) Good suggestion, as it's one that appealed to me also.

Thank you all!

Look at the bottom two knives in the picture below. The bottom is an '07 Collector's Tin Buck #110 $30 goodie from Wally World at Christmas. The standard and unpolished blade of 420HC version is ~$26 there - great price for that strong classic lockback. That is a 3.75" bladed true classic. Above it is their fall '07 entry - a #419 Folding Kalinga Pro S30V - it will run close to $100 mail order and has a 3.88" blade. It is a very strong liner-lock. You can also get the 110 in S30V steel from Cabela's as their 'Alaskan Guide' 110 with a blackish At-Ti-N coating for ~$68 + s/h. They are American made with excellent heat treated steels - even the 'lowly' 420HC of the $26 variant will amaze you. My hands are medium-large - they are both extremely comfortable in use. Good luck - and keep us apprised.

PS The top knife is the Buck #408 Fixed Blade Kalinga Pro in S30V. The K-Ps are almost too pretty to use!

My blade is stamped Jul 2006 do you think its 440a or one of the other steels??

oh i forgot to tell you guys another great bit bout my blur: a couple monthes ago i dropped my knife as i was pulling it out my pocket and activating it and it fell right on the very tip of it on concrete! The very tip was bent slightly but now its back to a point no damage done to the torsion bar or the blade itself!

I know you have already ordered the Blur. After it comes you will need to order a ZT0200 in order to get the heavy duty build you want. Do a google search on the ZT0200. Just go to google and type in the following; ZT0200 site:bladeforums.com You will see what I mean!:thumbup::D

Alright, I did order the blur, and plan on keeping it (shipped out today)

cutter17: THANKS for the suggestion! I looked up the zt0200 and am completely enamored. It was a little over what I planned to spend (especially after the blur), but I ordered one anyway. If the zt0301/zt0302 had been in normal colors I would have probably ordered that as well...and may still in a few months if I like the 0200 as much as I think I will.

I would definaly go for a Spyderco Manix, Chinook 3 or a Benchmade 14200. The Benchmade is a little hefty, but built like a tank , and i find it to be even stronger than the spyderco knives mentioned..
Thanks
Matt B.

Gotta agree with Stainz on this one... Buck Kalinga Pro..

You're all killing me! My intention was to order one knife, and I've already got two on the way!

The last thing I need is another hobby - but it looks like it's headed that way. Some beautiful stuff posted here, great suggestions. I want it all.

Ah well....since the price of ammo became outrageous, I stopped feeding the AR - guess I can buy steel for a little bit.

Looks like you've been bit.

Take your time, ask questions, research, only buy good quality stuff.
You can always sell quality knives anywhere.
Some very sharp people here! (pun intended)
