Okay, looking for some folder advice...This will be my new EDC knife...needs to be a good steel that will hold a scarry sharp edge, between 3-4 inch blade, $150.00 neighborhood. I also look for tip up carry

I've carried a Spyderco Delica (AUS8) for 8 years. A BM 9100 auto became my duty knife at work (AD Mil) a couple years ago. Not real impressed with the Tanto tip and I'm having to tighten the blade more often which irratates the heck out of me. I want to stay away from serrated edge. I tried to search as i'm sure this has came up before but i kept getting page error.

Thanks in advance

you can try the new delica or endura, they come with VG10 now, or a spyderco native S30V or nativeIII in VG10.
all of these also have riveted construction so you don't have to tighten anything. personally i recommend the native, it's one tough knife.

The sharpest knives I've ever found are all Spydercos. They come sharp and they are pretty easy to maintain sharp. There are a lot in the blade length you specified. Nearly all of them are a lot less than $150. If you're willing to spend $150, the Al Mar SERE 2000 is a good choice. It has VG10 steel that can take a super sharp edge and arguably looks better than the Spydercos. I'm a big fan of both Al Mar and Spyderco knives.

I am also a big fan of Al Mar and Spyderco. I have an Al Mar Shrike that is my all time favorite knife. You can now get them with G-10 scales and they will be less than $150 probably closer to $120.

If you want to go a less expensive route but still get a good knife, Spyderco is the way to go. The Para-Militray may be a good choice. The Endura is less expensive and it comes with VG-10 steel. I don't need anything better than VG-10 (if there really is anything better).

Benchmade 710 may be what you are looking for as well. It is tip down. Has a sharp point, not Tanto style. G-10 scales. Axis lock is amazing. Good work knife. I have one for trade, let me know if you want it, I can make you a good deal.

Para is tip down...but a nice knife. I'm very fond of Spyderco, i didn't want to bias anyone so i didn't mention any knives at first. What does everyone think of the Manix? Sounds like it gets good reviews...I'm also thinking about Emerson? I've had a buddies mini commander for a few days and i love to ergo of the G-10 and the smoothness of it but not quite sold on the blade...find myself looking for something else. The Rat Trap is also got my attention eventhough it's tip down...Hey it's from the Swamp

How does S30V compare to VG-10 or D2?

Thanks for the info...

I would go with the BM AFCK 806, I have carried my old 806 for years and has never been anything short of a great edc knife IMO. If you are military or L.E. another great knife IMO is the BM AFO 9050 auto . It has a great blade profile for utility use. As for your old BM ( might have to take it to your BM knife dealer) sent It to Benchmade Knife co. and they will have it like new in about 3 weeks. John

Wow - there are so many. My favorites are easy to carry, relatively light, and have strong locks:

Benchmade 710HS. About the same blade length as the 806, but shorter in the handle. M2 tool steel gets wicked sharp.

Spyderco Military - S30V steel, flat ground blade, oversized hole for easy opening. Great slicer.

(Tip-down carry)
Buck Mayo - S30V steel, Ti handles. Slim package, also a wicked slicer. The tip down carry works on the Buck Mayo because the opening hole is right by your thumb when you pull the knife out.

I've looked around a lot for basically the exact same knife as you. Tip-up, good steel (better than AUS6/8 like with Kershaw/Cold Steel), preferably a metal handle, tightenable blade pivot (vs. riveted which gets loose and you can't do anything about it), tough steel that'll get sharp and stay that way.

I prefer a tanto point, like my CS Voyager, as the two fairly straight edges are more useful to me than a clip point, or curved blade.

Spyderco: There are a few models I like, but they often have tip-down carry (STUPID, imho), and I like a thumbstud vs. a sypderhole (a topic debated here a lot). I like something that'll ride well in my pocket, which is not always a Spyder, b/c the hole makes those blades so tall they take up a lot of room folded up.

Benchmade: Probably the way to go here. They make many models in good steel (D2 options on many of them). I'm not a fan of their styles usually, though, and 154CM is kinda "OK" steel nowadays of CPM-3V and S30V. Though some models are nice, like the 732 and 943: Their clips facing the right way :).

Others: I think you might want to out of the box. Though I hate the liner-lock (Walker lock) as it tends to jam, there are a few I really like.

Al Mar SERE 2000 (highly adored around here)
Al Mar Shrike (also available with G10 handles)
Seki-Cut Encounter (I've heard nothing but good stuff about this one, also available at AG Russell)

Camillus: The EDC and Dominator are really nice, now available in really nice steels, but the clip is ugly, huge, and annoyingly tip-down. The MAXX is a nice large knife which I've considered.

SOG: Mostly AUS8, probably not what you're looking for either.

Microtech: Their non-auto knives are popular, high quality, and worth consideration. This just might be my next EDC, if not the Seki-Cut above.

Buck: The TNT and friends is popular, but I don't really like framelock and it's tip-down again. Their Strider coop knivers are nice too. Clips are tip-up, which is nice.

That oughta get you on your way. Check out AG Russell's site, too. They've probably got like 50 knives that'd work for you. Fun to look through it all.
Right now my EDC is a CS Voyager, which is actually just what I need. It's a little sloppy after 2 years, but the steel's sharp and stays that way (will stay semi-shaving sharp) for a week or so of hard use which is good enough for me. Great blade, thumbstud, and best pocket clip I've found yet. Light, comfy but big enough for big jobs and self defense. If it ever does give out or get lost, I'm gettin one of the ones I talked about above.

Sorry for all the reading material, good luck!

EDIT: If you don't make it all the way through all that, it should at least illustrate you've got a lot of options! Most steel will be good enough for you, so look at grip shape/material, blade shape, lock type, and clip type before you check whether it's S30V, D2, or whatever.

Try and handle these knives in person if you can. See what feels best in your hand and in your pocket.

I'd recommend the BM710HS. It's a solid knife and will last you for a long time. I've carired one for a good 4 years and never had a problem with it.

If you prefer something a little litter and shorter check out the BM Doug Ritter Grip.

If you want a beefier feeling knife check out the Spyderco Manix.

The BM806 is a great knife as well, but unless you really like the finger cut out for a more positive grip it has the same blade length as the 710, but with a longer handle.

From my experiance the M2 in the BM710HS takes a wicked scary sharp edge.

For the money you will hard pressed to find a better knife than the Spyderco Native III with VG-10.

Good luck,
Allen.

WadeF hit all my suggestions but one, the Benchmade 520, it is a tank of a knife.

I can't recommend the BM 806D2 enough. IMO it's a near perfect EDC. The 710 would also be one worth very close consideration.

The Swamp Rat Knife Works Rat Trap looks like an awesome knife, if you dont mind a liner lock. So people dont trust them, others dont mind them.
