So this site is gonna be the end of me! First you guys got me hooked on big ol' choppers so i just had to make one. Now i am jonesing to make a folder. Is there a folder tutorial anywhere i could look at? Also any tips and/or tricks that you all have found helpful, and what type of folder would be best for a beginner folder maker ie: slip joint, friction, ect...

thanks for the help

I don't have time to do your googling for you, but I'll point you toward a few good slipjoint tutorials.

Chris Crawford has a good one, shows alot about fitup between the spring and blade.

Jim Moyer has a good one that's linked from knifedogs. Shows how to build a slipjoint without using a pattern. Helped me understand the geometry issues involved.

There's also a linerless slipjoint WIP out there, by I think Alistair Phillips. Shows the process start to finish for a linerless.

I just made my first folder, a linerless slipjoint. I followed Moyer and Crawford, then found Phillips after I had already finished.

There are a few good books you can get also.
How To Make Folding Knives
by Ron Lake, Frank Centofante and Wayne Clay

The Tactical Folding Knife
by Bob Terzuola

And The Wonder of Knifemaking
by Wayne Goddard

Not in any way saying these are the only 3 books dealing with folders, just these are the three i have and are alll great books. I would highly recommend them for an amazing amount of in depth detail about making folding knives.

Buy a couple cheap ones and take them apart. See what they have in common and start building. Trial and error is the best way to learn.

All the usual suppliers have kits for various types of folders, too.

Go to Don Robinson's Web site. He has some excellent inexpesive booklets for sale on all of them. Frank

And now to address the last question in your post. Having only made a couple folders, it would seem that the slipjoint was the easiest. Others may disagree, but I found that adjusting a spring was much easier than cutting a lock and mounting the stop pin. The blade seems about the same in all folders with only minor differences.

thank you guys very much. think im gonna go w/ a slipjoint for the first one

Tom Anderson did a very nicely done WIP on a frame lock a few years back and it is posted up on the usualsuspects.net and also on knifedogs. I just have a heck of a time finding it on bladeforums. Sorry I dont think we are supposed to pimp other sites. I will look on here to find it if I can too.

You can find it here

http://usualsuspect.net/forums/showthread.php?t=191&page=2

and you may be able to email Tom and ask him, his a nice guy https://artistryintitanium.com/Home_Page.php

Ray Rogers has a good linerlock tutorial at his website.

Tom Anderson's tutorial is great. Just google "Tom Anderson framelock tutorial."

Also, someone posted a link here a while back to a copy of Terzuola's book for free- not sure about the legality of this, but God help me I downloaded it. Maybe you can find it, too.
