Folders and Gloves

Hi :)

Any of you have mastered the art of withdrawing a folder and open it while wearing winter gloves?

Now comes the cold season and I usually wear leather gloves (the thick kind, with furr on the inside), and I always get mad for not being able to rapidly pull out a knife for SD (I don't need speed for all other uses) purposes if the situation arises.

A fixed blade is not an option, I jUST can't carry that (if I could, I'd get a shoulder harness in a second!:D )

Any kind of feedback on this would be welcomed

bye!

Hi,

I know your problem, same here in Sweden.

Get an Emerson knife with the wave feature, then you don't have to mess with thumbstuds etc. it works well for me.
Maybe even a Super Commander?

Good luck!

One of the first things I did with my Benchmade 806D2 Axis AFCK was put on a pair of leather gloves. The handle is great. I can open it with the finger hole or flick it open with gloves on. Gotta be careful closing knives with gloves on. If you pursue "business as usual" your fingers may be out of the way, but the gloves probably aren't.

Well, my problem is more like accesing the folder on a pocket of the coat with gloves on, once I get it on my hand I can flick it open, that's no big deal. :D

I kinda loose grip on the handle when I reach the knife, since the tip of my fingers are not exactly where the fingers of the gloves end.

Maybe any of you know about some special thin gloves that still don't let the air pass through the fabric? I have some other gloves made of cotton, but when the wind blows, the cold air gets between the lil spaces inbetween and I get cold anyway. They have to look nice too, I can't use some special ops ultra tactical gloves (thinking that this guys must have gloves that let them use their "tools") on public all days, too conspicuous

i think a wave might be your best option. Otherwise the military cuz it has a large spidey hole.

How about a pair of leather driving gloves (close-fitting) with thinsulate lining? I have a pair from the local department store that work well with most of my folders, especially Spyderco. The leather is very grippy and gives a good feel for the knife.

When it gets really cold, I switch to a thicker pair of gloves and have the same trouble as you. And on the worst days I switch to a pair of elkskin mittens...needless to say I don't do any one-hand opening with those...:D

Enjoy your cool weather. I am sweltering up here and watching the rust spots form on everything...;)

I think it really amounts to the proper choice of knife, rather than glove. The one folder I can think of that really takes well to gloves is the Spydie Military. It has an oversize handle and large opening hole. Almost like it was made to be used with gloves.

I have the same problem. I think trying to find nice looking and warm gloves that allow you to properly feel your current knife is harder than trying to find a different knife that you can feel with your current gloves. I have a different set of knives that I use in my winter coats. I'll still carry my regular everyday carry beneath that in my pants pocket for when I reach my destination and the coat comes off, but the coat pocket gets something else just for the fact that my hands would be gloved.

You really will have to go and handle different knives with those gloves on. I think Knifenerd's suggestion of a Spyderco Military is a good one since in all likelihood you'll need a big handle. Also check out the Camillus C.U.D.A., the large version. Its button lever opening works very well with leather gloves; you don't really need to feel the button so much as just know its general location on the knife and push your thumb across the area. The leather glove's texture actually grips the button better than your ungloved thumb.

I never wear gloves, I can't stand them. But based n theory I would say any WAVED Emerson would suit your needs well. While more SD oriented they also work very well for utility. An assisted opening folder from Kershaw may fit the bill as well. Any knife with a heavy blade is rather easy to just open with inertia. There's a thread about it somewhere in General.

Well, as stated above, the waved emmerson is nice.

But.. the spyderco military is made for excactly that.. the XXL hole will allow you to open it even with thick gloves.

Also any flipper opening ( MAXX 5.5, Kershaw Boa, CRKT M-16 .... ) will allow you to open it with gloves.

Personally I carry them thin leather gloves with a thin coat of fur on the inside.. I can open just about anything .

Greetz and take care, bart.

The Spyderco Gunting seems like it would be a decent choice for gloved-hands use. It has a large handle, and that hump to leverage or grab onto. The hump should also help prevent the gloved hand from sliding forward.

The Spyderco Military was made BIG for serious use when working with gloves. The enlarged Spydie hole allows the knife to be easily accessible, and deployed, with ease while wearing gloves.

IMHO, this is the best choice.;)

Good Luck.

well gentlemen, nice inputs in here :)
you certainly gave me a direction to start thinking.

I definately liked the answer from Grapevine about changing knifes while wearing gloves, its simple yet efective and I havent thought about it (I was just thinking about the gloves)

Guess I'll have to feel a Spiderco Military (if I can find one in here) or get a Commander (wich I always wanted by the way)

anyways, thank you very much :-)

Benchmade knives with Axis lock offer the opportunity to open the knive by pulling back on the Axis lock and flipping the blade out locked solid. This could be a good solution.

Also, certain models possess not too great a ball detente, so that merely downward snap movement opens the knive. My BM Stryker has this "capability", turning a liability into a feature. I've practiced it a bit to the extent that it opens as though it were an automatic.

Another solution is a "flpper-enabled" opening knife. CRKT M-16 is an example, as is the Cuda Mad Maxx and a custom version by Darrel Ralph. My custom Darrel opens like lightning - I'd say even faster than my MT CT II, for heaven's sake.

All the above are pretty good solutions to fast gloved usage.
