Folders, pin pivots or screwed together?

Lately you see mostly screwed together folders, and only the more traditional folders are pin/peened pivots. I've had some smaller bladed knives that seemed to become loose over the years, I wondered why do they continue to make them that way? Cost? Now a days I tend to only purchase folders that are screwed together.

What's the consensus on this thought?

Gary,

I prefer the screwed together for the very same reasons.

I think a traditional stockman or trapper pattern would look downright ugly with pivot screws..... dont u?

just read it over again... u mean small lockbacks and such?? cost and mass production. as well as warrantee service reasons. It requires more precise fit, and people have to tighten down the screws and make sure they are adjusted right. Also, aside from changes in the assembly process, the designs would need to be changed... and we all know how long those take...lol

I have to weigh in for adjustable pivots that can be tightened if the blade ever develops play.

This is probably more important in hard use lockbacks than in tradtional slip joints but I believe even a traditional slip joint might benefit from a well thought out adjustable pivot.

All that being said an adjustable pivot will definitely increase cost.

I have both a hammer and a screwdriver. So, I can tighten both types. Therefor, I don't really care if it is pinned, or screwed.

I also have a hammer, but once you re-peen the pivot, you should refinish the bolsters, if they have bolsters. And that's something you can do only so often I would think?

Paul Davidson said he remembers a folder that was screwed together, but my memory isn't all that good, maybe Paul will join in and share that, I do remember him saying that AG Russell had a similar knife being made from that pattern but it wasn't screw construction.
