I have been looking for a good folder in the 5 inch blade size for daily carry when not armed with a firearm. All I have found are the Cold Steel models.
There are not any Cold Steel knifes in the stores around here so I can't tell by looking online if they feel balanced.
What others would make a good or better choice? I want to stay under $150.
Thanks for your ideas. Hank

If you like the Cold Steel- Try the Vaquero Grande- It's a big handfull of knife.

Only one that immediately comes to mind is the Benchmade LFK. 5.2 inch blade. It's kinda neat in that the handle is much shorter than the blade. There's a little arm that comes out to catch the last inch or so. 62 bucks on gpknives.

The Cold Steel folders with the longer blades will give you good, long reliable service. The serrated ones are super sharp and toothie, but I am not really a serrated man my self. I like plain blades for ease of sharpening. do a lot of shopping arround on-line before you buy one, because prices vary greatly. The voyager series have a very high strength to weight ratio (they are very light for how strong they are). The Recon1 series with the g-10 handle scales are very very strong, a bit heavier, but only have a 4 inch blade.

Also the CS Rajah 2 looks interesting, I'd kinda like to handle one myself...

The SOG Elite II looks good. It has AUS8 steel. I found one for $80 including shipping at workingperson.com . What do think? Would it be better than the Cold Steel?

Yeah Esav is right. SOG has already started distributing the VG10 versions but some retailers may still have the older stock. Having said that, AUS8 is still a good steel, but VG10 will be even better

I don't think I'd notice much difference in the Pentagon Elite daggers, but it should be a big improvement in the Spec Elites which are more slicers.

Be sure you know which SOG - the Pentagon Elite II and Spec Elite II have very different blade shapes. Also, SOG is in the middle of an upgrade from AUS8 to VG10, which is really nice. I don't know when the 5" versions are upgrading though.

Take a look at our SOG Specialty Knives forum for more information on them at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=729

Way to go Sog! I had no idea, I guess I should sneak over to their forum and say whats up to Chris. ;)

edit: Just saw the $150 price limit - sorry - I just looked up the price on these, and they seem to be in the 350 range. :(

How about this one? Extrema Ratio RAO

A little under 5" at 120mm (4.7") - but it looks really hefty. No personal experience with it - just looks like something I could see myself interested in if I needed a big heavy duty folder.

Im totally stoked... I just went to this local shop, the guy doesnt really know much about knives, the thing is, is that he gets KILLER deals on his knives so he has been selling them on the bay. Dozier Thorns, alot of CS stuff and whatnot anyway he had what was left under the glass today because its his remaining stock. he had 3 of the 6" zytel CS Ti-Lites left. Him and I chat alot so he said he'd sell me one for 20 bucks brand new!

How much do these usuallly go for? Maybe I should trade it on the board or just keep it? He has some other CS knives too, the other big 6" folder w/e its called.

Anyway Im looking at this knife and for th 53 bucks he has em listed at Id say its a very good deal. Solid lock up no play at all nested liners AUS8 (lots of it haha) waved... good deal imo...

Just me or is the clip better off more to the left?

Another thing, the voyager series have 5 and 6 inch folders. I own a 5 inch tanto and 6 inch clip point and feel that they are good value for money (paid 50 bucks for the X2 and 40 for the Tanto, love ebay :)). However even though they are strong enough as claimed by many, don't anyone feel that liners (nested or otherwise) and screw construction (not rivets) will be a good improvement? I am uncomfortable with a 'just' zytel handle and rivets. I don't mind paying bit more for this, anyone else feels that this'll be an improvement?

(lastly, i wonder if the 'wave' feature with the above folder will work? Anyone experienced waving a big folder?)

The "wave" on the knife I just posted about doesnt seem to do all or even most of the work... Its the heavy blade that makes it work. I think The Emerson design is much better but it does work on the big CS knives just not in the same way.

As for the clip, that was the very first thing I noticed about that picture, I dont think Id like having that much of the knife sticking outta my pocket. I cant wait to check one out though.

The constructin of this one (the ti-lite) looks to be screw together... Id have to agree though about a knife simply pinned together. Its really bugged me about my Native...
