Folders with "child-safe" locks

I am looking to find folders that have a similar locking mechanism to those on the Benchmade Barrage - that is, locks that keep the knife from being opened up.

I have two kids, and with a growing collection of knives, I want to make sure that those I have will be impossible for them to open.

Any other makes/brands that come to mind?

Thanks!

Hogue extreme...but my opinion is keep them put up and teach your kiddos how to handle them (if age appropriate)

My kids (6 and 8, at the time they were 5 and 7)

Agreed. Kids will find a way to get into your gear no matter what, short of locking them in a safe (the knives, not the kids) and always having the keys on your person. Far better to teach them the correct way to handle a knife safely. And it offers a great teaching opportunity as you show them the different things this tool can be used for. My two have been confidently and competently handling my SAKs since they were eight and five respectively, and know how to open and close all my folders safely. Also, if you stipulate that they are allowed to look at your knives with you present and provided they have asked first, the temptation to sneak a look behind your back and perhaps risk injury will be significantly reduced (IMO).

Kershaw Spec Bamp and Boa have that kind of safety: but were both discontinued so are probably difficult to obtain.
Traditional folders with two-hand opening/closing are probably more difficult for small children to open.

Great advice ozgooner.

To me, blades that lock in the closed position are just a hassle. They will accidentally be locked in the closed position when you are trying to open them.

Now to answer your question OP, it is mostly assisted openers that have locks to keep the blade from opening. Kershaw Leek and Sog Twitch come to mind.

Several of the SOG assisted openers (Flash, Aegis, Trident) have a small safety lock in the side of the handle. The Twitch series has it on the back (like the Barrage/Mini-Barrage). The Kershaw onion series (Chive, Scallion, Leek, Shallot) have one as well, but those are easier to inadvertently disengage. The CRKT Rave has a safety sort of built into the thumbstud (have to depress the switch on the thumbstud to release the lock).

I once fell asleep on the floor with my son in his gated play room when he was a maybe 12-14 months old only to wake up and find him sitting next to me with my Benchmade AFCK opened with both tiny hands wrapped around the blade. I'm guessing that it must have slid out of my back pocket while setting and playing with him on the floor. I carefully pried his little vice-like fingers off the blade and was very relieved to see that he was uncut. The knife was in need of a touch up on the crock sticks, but after that day, as long as my kids were small, I kept my EDC rather dull (for a knife guy). Now teens, both my boys are getting knives for christmas.

Guardian Angels were working overtime roosterscrow on that day! Gave me chills while reading your post. Just goes to show how quick something can happen, that can not be reversed when dealing with young children. My son could not have a knife until I was satisfied that he was trained in the proper use and was mature enough to trust with one. Same was true about about guns.

Thanks guys. I am obviously going to keep all my gear out of reach - I just like the added security of having a lock on the knife on the off chance that they pick my pocket or a knife falls out of a pocket while in the car.

How do you prefer storing your knives? I was thinking locked Pelican case. Maybe that is overkill.

I know that CRKT has outburst of something like that where you need to push down on the thumbstud to unlock it. Not sure if that's what your looking for.

SOG Aegis has a lock.

However, buying a knife with a lock as #1 priority is going to leave you with a short list of "awesome" knives to use.

It's just better to get a storage box with a combination lock.

We have a saying at our gun club, "don't child proof your gun, rather gun proof your child". Works with knives too. My 5, running 6, granddaughter will never touch my guns or knives unless it's under supervision.

I would rather teach a child, my nephew is not allowed to use any knife until he is 10 people who make rules like that make a problem not stop it
