Hey, long time lurker on the forums however this is my first post.

I have really been looking for a knife to EDC, but my millie is just too huge and would be illegal to carry concealed in Chicago due to our city ordinance on blade length, which I believe is restricted to 2.5".

I have looked at alot of knives, and was completely sold on a SOG Twitch or Blink, but I am not too familiar with the legality of AO knives with city ordinances in Chicago.

In the burbs, EDCing is generally not a problem, but due to attending night classes and generally being all over the city at night, I would prefer to have something to EDC just for general task and possibly, if needed, SD.

------Sorry about posting this is reviews, didn't even notice until the screen was loading after I hit post. Please move to GD. :]

And I frantically awaiting the production of the Spyderco Chicago... since that is not available currently, I would love to hear your recommendations.

Thanks,

sh

Personally, I would not have thought the Chicago (CF linerlock) would have been the greatest choice (for SD anyway, certainly not that much money in a SD knife ;)).

For the money... can't beat the Subcom F series, the Dragonfly, or the Cricket.

Personally, I am partial to the original design Subcom F, most blade length, useable point, and the tip is angled best of them all.
The Subclaw and Wharncom require a angled wrist, which kind of weakens your grip.

For utility, I haven't found much better than the Wharncom or Cricket, but I mostly use that fine tip for work. The Dragonfly and original Subcom F are probably the most versatile.

Subcom F or the Wharncom or Subclaw variant would be an excellent choice, for both utility and SD.

I was really digging the look of that new Benchmade Aphid model 10350; however, it would appear as though they chose to dull down it's appearance before shipping. (old) (new?)

Before that was announced, my eye was on a SOG Flash I as a small folder.

Alas, both knives mentioned here are assisted opening, which you said might be a problem for you. You said you were sold on the Twitch/Blink... maybe it's worth the digging to find out about the ordinances?

As to A/Os being legal, that's something you'll have to check on, but make sure you check out the city's municipal codes if that's where you'll be most of the time.

For an example, Calif's laws aren't that bad & you don't have a limit on blade length for folders, but go to LA & that changes (I believe it's 3" or less).

There're many folders that fit your size. The Boker Subcom series are very nice, but if you want better steel, here're a few to think about:

Several little Spydercos including: Cricket, Dragonfly, &Ladybug, but personally, I like the Copilot & Navigator best as they just fit my hand better.

The Kershaw Chive & Scallion are nice, but they have 420HC, IIRC. SOG's Flash I, Twitch, & Blink are all good AUS 8 options, although I found the Blink to probably be the most comfortable of the SOG's (I found the Flash I to just be too small to open easily).

If AUS 8's acceptable, I think the Boker Subcom series are probably the best (Comfortable, frame-locks, & well made).

Good luck with whatever you get.

I didn't realize that it is 2.5" in Chicago. I have a Fallkniven U2 that works, as does a Spyderco Kopa.

in the city i go to school in the limit is 2.5" also... i carry a leatherman c301 that i picket up at walmart for just a few bucks, its 2.5" and works for me, but im a pretty casual knife user so i dont need anything super duper

Ladybug for SD. Now that is scary. When the laws reach this point, maybe a good ole fashioned walkin' stick would serve you better. Just remember to limp in front of the law.

I forget at times how lucky I am not to have to deal with the big city BS, that some of you fine folks do. Around here a knife is for cutting stuff, a big knife is for chopping stuff down, and SD is in the back window gun rack.

PS: SD is also great for rabbits and other small game that make gravy.
