Does anyone know if there is a "folding crooked knife" out there? I've looked around here on BF, and other than a couple of fixed blades, I don't see a folder.

The reason I'm looking for a folder is for weight & space reasons.

I don't recall seeing any, Chris. I have a few of the "straight" crooked knives.

Elliott - thanks; I have a couple of larger fixed blades myself.

Now that I think about it, I should explain a little further, since I didn't even know what these things were 'til last year. :p

For those who aren't familiar, a "crooked knife" basically has a blade with a bend or a bow in it that allows for hollowing out wooden objects, ie: like a canoe, or on a small (campout) scale, a bowl. I'm planning to teach the older Scouts how to carve primitive utensils this summer, and it's easy, until you want to hollow out a spoon or bowl. I tried to do a spoon with the sheepfoot & spay on my Stockman on Tuesday. I had a glove on, thankfully, or my left thumb would look like something out of a Romero film. I think I'm in a little over my head on this one, so I'll probably pass this project on to another teacher, but I'm wondering about a folding, bent-blade type carver. It cuts & shaves on the draw stroke, so it doesn't have to lock.

Borrowed this image from ragweedforge.com to give folks unfamiliar with these knives some idea of what's being discussed:

There are "hoof" knives there as well which have a smaller/tighter radius.

Hi,

Can't help with the knife end of your dilemma. But, you can easily create the bowl shaped depressions you want by using burning embers to do the work. you can simply char the area to be removed and then scrape out with a more conventional blade.

WOW  you learn something new every day. I should have asked here sooner. That carvin' jack is absolutely perfect for what I'm looking for. I'll be sending an order A.G.'s way real soon. The hoof knives are good too.

I, and my thumb  thank all of you for your help.

For what it is worth- I have the carvin Jack and the blades are great- but the lock and handle leave something else to be desired. Just be prepared to hav eto force some blades open occasionally as there is no stop and my blades go too deep into the handle at times and bind.

For small items like a spoon, you might want to consider a raze knife.

They fold, and are usually inexpensive on the bay.
