Folding Hissatsu--What am I doing wrong?

I just purchased a folding Hissatsu with the outburst from New Graham. I really like the knife, but the outburst feature has me defeated.

I have tried and tried, and once in a while, I can get it to open. I have lost some serious skin from my right thumb.

I have lubricated the knife and adjusting the pivot pin didn't help.

Any ideas? I am trying to open it as the instruction book says.

Thanks.

John

I feel your pain. I sold mine shortly after I got it a year or so ago for the same reason. The blade was absolutely awesome but I was killing my fingers trying to open it.:thumbdn:

You should be able to push the stud easy and the blade will spring open if it's working right. You can try tweaking the pivot pin and see if loosening it a bit helps. You may have to adjust it back and forth a while to get it so it's not too tight or loose.
I'm not familiar with the CRKT assisted opening, but if it doesn't work well what's the sense in having it? Their non-assisted openers always open easy.

I dont have too much experience with CRKT's outburst, I had a mini tighe with outburst, it was a bear to open. I returned it two days later.

Not familiar with the Hissatsu but I have 3 CRKT AO knives, the My Tighe, Mini My Tighe and Tighe Breaker. All of them open slick and easy, although a couple did require a bit of tweaking on the pivot tension to get them working smoothly.

hm.....the ones I fondled were quite easy to open.
And I have small hands.

What I have seen, some blades are slightly stuck between the scales.
Can you detect some wear on the coating on the sides of the blade?

If thats so, try bending the scales a bit, or polish the balde.

just my .02...

I've owned two of them and they open easy and smooth, I think you may have a defected one if it's that hard to open...

I have the Folding Hissatsu and it is easy to open for me. I handed it to a co-worker of mine and he had a difficult time opening it. I'm not sure why but maybe it has to do with the shape/size of his thumb or maybe the softness of his skin on his thumb. Mostly his thumb would just slip of the thumb disc. And the few times he could start the Outburst mechanism, his thumb tip would catch the side of blade like a brake and slow the opening or stop it completely from opening. Then he would have to re-grip and push it open again.

Needless to say, he thought it was a piece of crap. Then I took it from him and opened it no problem. Weird.

Mine had a lot of trouble too. Sooner or later the torsion bar will wear in and it will get easier. A drop of grease on the torsion bar itself, where it contacts the blade, is also a big help.

Thanks everyone.

UpChuck--Your friend's problems opening it are kind of like mine. I realized it would take practice, but for every one time I could get it open, I had to try ten times. When I did get it open, I had the blade drag/re-grip problem myself. I worked on it until I got a raw spot on my thumb.

Jill--You are right also.

I can open it w/o the assist. I did call CRKT, and they were very nice and said they would look at it under warranty.

I too, like the blade, which is why I'd like to use the knife with the outburst. When I can get it to open, I like the outburst idea.

One problem with thumbstud openings is which way to push on them. For example, trying to open my Sebenzas by poshing out from the handle is a sure way to a sore thumb. But pushing the stud toward the front of the handle opens it smoothly and easily.

AO + thumbstud/disc is a terrible combination IMO.

Either it's hard to hold onto the knife when it opens, or your thumb catches the blade and stops it from opening. At least in my experience.

If you like AO, a flipper is far superior. Again, just my opinion.

I share that opinion.

The hissatsu folder is cool but it isn't practical for any possible use including sd.

I would disagree. I like the blade shape. It slices quite well. I can pretty much cut anything as well as any of my other knives can. I even set it aside for the self defense role. I guess I'm not 'practical'. ;)

Try what Esav suggested. Dig your thumb tip into the disc and push forward instead of outward. This has helped on a difficult opening folder I had in the past but with a stud. Hope this helps.

on mine i use top 1/3 of thumb & the trick is to push straight forward. by using theleft side of thumb your chance of getting cut is slight, do'nt push up just stright towards the top of frame.

The blade is not why I say it is impractical although it performs extremely poorly compared to a thinner blade if you need to cut through something thick such as heavy-duty cardboard. The handle is not bad either- I love its ergos.

I say it is impractical because deploying a blade should not be a noteworthy task. Taking the ao bar out does not improve things too much either- then you have to worry about it coming open in your pocket because it clips tip up only and nothing holds the blade closed.

My point is that for me, it is not a "noteworhty" task. I have no problems opening unlike my co-worker. But if I had difficulty opening it, I'd feel the same as you.
