Folding Hunter

I've been looking around lately for a somewhat affordable new knife to keep in my pheasant hunting vest to have a dedicated knife for the sport instead of having to worry about packing a Spyderco or Benchmade before leaving, or, if I do take one, to have as a back-up should I lose the other or would just prefer a different knife. I've been looking at several folding hunters, and I've selected four that appeal to me the most. I very much like the Buck 110 from Cabela's with the S30V heat treated by Pal Bos; it seems to be a very, very nice knife for the money, and an old, reliable design that I've had experience with since I inherited my Dad's old 110 in 420HC. How does the S30V version stack up?

I've also been interested in the folding Buck Kalinga, especially the S30V version but also the FRN/420HC version. How are those? Any opinions would be appreciated.

The Cold Steel Master Hunter seems to be a nice knife. Yes, I know that Mr. Thompson's policies are quite controversial but it seems to be a good design and was reviewed quite favorably in Tactical Knives. I particularly like the Thermorun handles, as I have one of the old Shinobu folders that have the same material. Which of these choices is the best? Thank you for your help.

Finally, the D2 tool steel version of the Benchmade Griptilian sold by Cabela's also seems to be a good design. I like the Axis lock in my 710 and Resistor, but haven't caught onto the Griptilian craze yet. Is the D2 as good as Dozier's, how does it perform, and how are the handles? Thanks for all your help and opinions. Any other suggestions would be great, too!

God bless you, America, and our men and women overseas.

I have the fixed blade CS Master Hunter with the rubbery handle and Carbon V blade. The handle has stood up well to lots of wear and tear, and I have liked the edge I can get and keep with the steel. It would like to rust in a flash, though.

Hope this helps.

For pheasant hunting tasks, I think that I would look very hard at some of the smaller fixed blades from Bob Dozier and/or Bark River.

On a strictly personal note, I've never liked a folding knife for hunting due to the increased effort needed to clean and maintain it over a fixed blade.

(Did I mention that I'm basically lazy?:p)
