I have the Tarani folder Karambit. It's a lockback.
The Emerson is a linerlock.
The Karambit techniques use the outside curve of the blade to defend with as well as the inner edge. In the folders, the outside edge is false [ unsharpned due to design parameters ].
If you would still use the outside edge as a striking platform [ which I would ]with the folder type Karambits the linerlock is going to be taking much stress and could likely fail/release at the wrong time causing the blade to close onto your fingers.
The lockback operates differently in locking the blade and using the outside edge as it can be used won't disengage the lock or be prone to such failures in my opinion.
The Emerson is quicker to deploy due to the linerlocks smoother operation and "wave" feature.
Once deployed it may take enough abuse to fail rather quickly striking with the outside edge of the blade.
I don't want to limit the design paramaters of the Karambit by only being able to rely on the inner edge for fear of lock failure.
The Tarani is slower to deploy but rock solid once accessed. Thats why I own one and not the other.
BTW--I've had 3 Emerson linerlocks purchased through me go back in the last 6 months as they didn't pass the spine whack testing and were capable, NIB, of unlocking without release of the liner manually. I like his products but I do not take chances like that in my personal defense options when I am aware of such issues as these.
