Folding knife as gift (around $40?)

I need to buy 5 folders for gifts (or if you have other non knife related groomsmen gifts, feel free to chime in) and would like to spend less than $40.

Right now I'm leaning to Kershaw Leeks. I have a Leek and it's a good knife. Other suggestions?

edit: Spyderco Tenacious? no experience with this knife.

Yes, the Tenacious is a nice little knife excepts the steel is kind of weak which is expected for knives in that price range. You can find tons of reviews on the tube.

$40.00 gift certificates to a knife or EDC store?

I know, that might seem impersonal, but I would dig it.

How about a Case slipjoint in that price range?

I'd feel comfortable giving a Kershaw as a gift given their lifetime warranty, but I'm not sure I'd go for the Leek, I've had bad luck with Kershaw torsion bars (like 6 times bad luck), so I'd suggest going for one with a simpler opening mechanism.

SAK would make a decent gift too, as would an Opinel.

Streamlight Microstream AAA Led flashlight
or
Zippo Lighters
or
BK13
or
Vic Farmer
or
fifths of Crown Royal
or
Dr. Grabow Omega tobacco pipes

buck vantage avid or if you can find somewhere that will give you a volume discount, you may find the vantage pro for that price. Or the tenacious is another good choice.

Or you could probably go the multi tool route and get a leatherman core or maybe a juice or skeletool. Not sure what they go for in the states.

Leeks are great gifts. I've given several, and use them myself.
Also, you could consider:
Boker Wharcom or Subcom
Spyderco Tenacious G-10, as you've already mentioned.
Leatherman Freestyle, Style CS, Sqirt, etc.

or perhaps a flashlight:
4 Sevens Quark Mini AA or MiNi 123 or CR2
Maratac AA or AAA or equivalent ITP A4 EOS

I would go with swiss army knives...i'm sure you know your groomsmen very well, but how much of a 'knife person' are they? if not so much, a spyderco tenacious or of the sorts might not ever really get used. The swiss on the other hand is a perfect edc even the sheeple would use.

Anyone I've ever given a Leek to has loved it, were surprised, and it became an EDC for folks that never have an EDC.

knifecenters having a sale on the spyderco spin, $31.95 for the spyderweb one, pretty damn good deal imo:thumbup:

Everyone needs a good pocket knife. Not everyone is a knife knut. I'd suggest the AG Russell 3.0 titanium lockback. It's simple, elegant, of the very best materials, and in your budget. It's big enough to be useful and small enough for any pocket and any situation.

This is to be a formal gift, so I would rule out anything plastic, anything likely to break, and anything agressive looking. Choosing a knife likely to be treasured by five different people rules out the extremes.

I don't know how well you know them, but if you don't know them that well, go with a SAK (any alox model). If anyone of them is a non-knife person and you're giving them a Spyderco Tenacious, it could be perceived as you giving them purely a weapon, while a SAK would be considered more of a tool, even to non-knife people.
And imho, SAK's just make excellent gifts (and are very good value for money).

I concur with this idea...

If not a SAK, then a Multi-tool.

Try the kershaw zing 1735, kershaw skyline, ontario rat 1, buck vantage series, or maybe crkt fulcrum or glide lock. The crkt fulcrum and glide lock make great gentlemen's folders and are unique. I've given 2 fulcrums aways and people were impressed with the unique opening method and the handle looks great.
