Hi! I'm currently considering buying a small folding knife (EDC) for my 16 year old son's birthday present. I live in California, and I'm unsure of whether or not a minor can own a knife. Please respond as soon as possible so I can order the knife in time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

To be safe I would get something around 2" in blade length. It doesn't seem like there are an restrictions on anything 2" or under. Maybe a Benchmade Benchmite. Apparently small automatics are also legal in California (Benchmite automatic also seems to fit that law). Just a suggestion.

Best be veeeery careful about any carry in, or even around, schools. The statutes restricting that are not always the same ones defining violations for having a knife other places.
Of course, since my family homeschools, I'm probably prohibited from keeping the shears for grooming the dog...
