folding knife recommendation

Spyderco. They have several models that will fit your needs. The Delica and Endura are good, all purpose models.
Oh, and welcome to the forums. :)

A Benchmade 551 Griptilian, or the smaller 556 Mini-Griptilian...Either would be an excellent choice. Also a good multi-tool is a "must have" on the utility belt.

Here's my little list of must have users:
Spyderco:
Mouse (if you can't find one, Blade-Tech has the new models in g10 or Carbon fiber) The Mouse is possibly my very favorite of my Spydies, Delica is a great EDC beater, Calypso Jr is a great knife, Native in VG-10 or s30v would make a good work knife too.
Benchmade:
Griptilians, big or little, the 556 mini grip is a common favorite around here, mine too. A brilliantly designed little hard use beater utility knife. Don't let folks juke you about 440c either, its as good all around steel as there is IMO. Especially the way BM does it. I think overall, this is the knife to beat among all the ones I listed/own here.
Benchmade 94x, these may be a little too nice for a work knife but dam, they are so cool.
Victorinox camper or hiker(or whichever model you like) always a safe bet with a SAK.

I carry a Benchmade Griptilian as a duty knife. Good ergonomics, they ahve the axis lock, super reliable, and economical.

And you need a fixed blade, Buck 119 or better in your briefcase or pack bag.

Camillus Dominator (especially the AG Russell manual one)
Buck Mayo
Benchmade Mini Griptillian 555 (thumb hole opener)

Victorinox One Hand Trekker. (or Trailmaster....whatever they now call it)
Blade for cutting, saw for sawing, screwdrivers (3), awl for awling, bottle opener for after shift, can opener for nuttin much, toothpick and tweezers.

Lotsa cops climb fences and grab wooden doors in ratty places. How many cops have a handy tweezer to take out the splinter that WILL get in their hand? Guarantee you would trade the fanciest serrated edge knife for a tweezer to take out the OWWIE!

You KNOW you're gonna either call or arrive simultaneously with EMT so how often will you have to pretend you are the "jaws of life" and cut someone out of a wreck?

More likely you will use it to adjust your sights or stop the damn mike holder from rattling and bothering you while driving. Thus the combination of screwdrivers.

May not impress the bad guys, but the baton, gun and pepper will do OK there.

:)

I'd certainly add another Griptillian vote. Hard to beat that Axis lock-up....

Let us know what you get and how you like it....

One thing overlooked on the mini grip I think is just how long that edge is on that thing!
Compared to my Native and Calypso Jr it suprised me as having a significantly longer edge and also edges out the Delica a bit too! I never would have thought that by looking at the knives seperately as the mini "seems" smaller overall than any of those.

Well, since you're a police ocifer :D , you could carry an automatic if you like. Granted, they are gonna be more expensive. Maybe something from Microtech or M.O.D. These two are kinda on the pricey side. Maybe an Emerson CQC7 or Commander. Can't go wrong with the Spydies either. Maybe a Kershaw Blur with the lightning fast assisted opening. decisions....decisions...........how much do you wann a spend??!!! LOL :)

You can also get the Emerson CQC7 or Commander with the "wave" feature which opens very quickly I hear. I haven't seen one in action. :(

Cannons - what do you see yourself using the knife for? - I mean what sort of tasks? For example ..If it's cutting seatbelts I'd say get a solid serrated edge knife, If its for opening bags of potato chips I'd say a small inexpensive plain edge knife - We will be better equipped to help recommend a good knife If you tell us what your needs from a knife will be. Welcome to the forum.

Another vote for the axis lock ; there's a lot to choice from.

The Spydercos are a good choice too, but I like the axis lock.

Spyderco Police model. Purpose designed and refined over a period of twenty years. Heavy steel handle that comes to a handy "point" at the butt end for breaking window glass, knocking on doors, impact weapon, light duty pry tool, etc. Serrated blade that just cuts and cuts and cuts. Also available in plain and combo, but serrated makes more sense in this model. Never know what you're gonna have to cut. Seatbelts, door panels, shattered safety glass windshields, etc.

Top it all off with one hand operation, awesome warranty, strong and reliable lock, exotic blade steel and a (new for 2004) stronger tip. This is the folder you should be getting.

Cannons231, I recommend either a plain edged Benchmade Mini Griptilian 556 or a Spyderco Delica.
Both are small, lightweight and well designed.

As mentioned previously, a multi tool is a must too..I like the Leatherman Pulse as it is compact and all the tools lock.
