Is there some standard or general consensus on what a "small", "medium", or "large" sized knife measures? Is it based on blade length? Total open length? Weight? Or is it just a matter of personal preference?

I've used blade length as my measure. 2.25" or less is small. 2.25-3" is medium. 3+" is large. This was influenced primarily by what knives I had and how big it feels in different carrying situations for me.

Just curious...

Any folder with blade length of 3.125 (3 1/8) inches or less is considered as "small", 3.125 to 3.6 inches is "medium", 3.75 to 6 inches is considered "large". Just my relatively worthless 2 cents worth. :p

Large is 4" and up. Small is 3" and under. But that's just my take. ;)

This is my take as well. Anywhere between 3-4" would be considered medium for the most part. However, an extended or bulky handle can often mangle the formula.

For me. 1-2.4'' small 2.5-3.4'' Medium 3.5-4'' Large <- My usual carry 4.1" + Too big to carry under normal circumstances, just feels like too much in the pocket.

General agreement from me, with one note.

My job allows folders, as long as the blade is 3" inches or less. I'm not sure what State and local laws affect others, but any concensus ought to include "what won't get you arrested for weapons violation"!

I don't base my catagorization on blade length but rather the length of the knife with folders. But my lengths correspond to about what Tyrone said above. I tend to prefer "large", but not too large that it is impractical to pocket carry. I want the knife to fit my hand.
