I just bought my first decent folding knive for work (Kershaw 1600ST)after years of using really cheap knives.I am so impressed with the quality that I would like to buy another for carrying when I'm not at work, and maybe collecting them also, so I started doing research and soon discovered the endless choices in not just manufacturers but also designs and blade material. The next one I buy I would like it to have some kind of "Assisted Opening" and be under 4 inches long when closed(like the Kershaw Black Chive)I would be thankful for any suggestions anyone has.

are you thinking of buying something other than kershaw? the assisted openers from kershaw are very popular.

for autos, microtech and benchmade make fine products.

SOG has some nice AO's. Flash 2, for example. Not too expensive either. Shop around Bro.

Hopefully in february you will see the frame lock scallions in silver or rainbow. Same size as regular scallion but thinner as it is a frame lock and not a liner lock.

I love the Kershaw Blackout. It has assisted opening and is about the size you are looking for. Another great one but not assisted is the Spydeco Delica.

Check out the Spyderco 'Native' in S30V steel - available at Wally World's for $40. Okay, not an 'assisted opener', but an easy thumb opener lockback. Made in the USA, too! Kershaw Blurs work well, too.

I carry a black chive every day and have for about 2 years now. It is a great little knife. For the price it is very impressive and useful. It is sheeple friendly as well.

Go a little bigger and get a Blur in S30V! :):)

Or Blur in SG2, great steel, limitted run, the same price.
Also, they are not AO, but you cannot go wrong with any Spyderco. And Native is the great start. For only $40 at walmart on on their web site you will have amazing pieces of steel in your hands

O.K. after reading the responses and doing some research I settled on four knives.Buck RUSH 291gy,Kershew CHIVE black &gold K1600BG,Kershaw RANDOMLEEK K1660GRYST,Kershaw LEEK K1660BG.If I had $300 I would buy all four, but I can only afford one,any input would be appreciated.

Using that, out of those the one that would fit your bill would seem to be the black and gold chive. I however have tried the chive for a bit and just went to go see how a leek felt in my hand. The leek's size is much more comfortable too me for most usage. You already have a leek for work so honestly if you ever needed that size blade you already have it. I end up holding the chive differently compared to the leek which may make a difference to you.

A friend of mine stopped by and showed me his new Spyderco Kiwi Redbone so I decided to check out their website, when I saw the Kiwi Mother of Pearl I knew that was the knife for me even if it does not have A.O. it looks too good to pass up and the fact that it is a close out item made the dicision to buy easy. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think you will be happy with just just about any folder from Spyderco. I have a couple Delicas, Caly3 CF, and a Native and they all rock. Great EDC, great blade steels. All knives are made in Colorado or Seki, Japan.

I just bought an S.O.G. Twitch II and it's a well built AO knife.
2 3/4" blade, Aus8, and AO for around 40 bones.
