Folding Oyster Knife needed...

It occurred to me today, as I was debating opening an oyster with my Sebenza and wondering if that would end up costing me a finger or two, that what the world really needs is a good tactical folding oyster knife. With a clip and Spyderhole (or something similar).

Something along the lines of a Gunting trainer, with a more oyster-oriented blade.

It'd have to have a mighty strong, reliable lock.

Anyone ever seen something like this?

Know anyone who could make one?

Here in Virginia, I use a medium sized flat blade screwdriver to open oysters. Locate the place where the shell halves are joined, insert the screwdriver blade and twist the handle. Magic. Works better than any oyster knife I have used. Perhaps try the same thing with the flat screwdriver blade of a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman tool.

Back in my college days, I spent a good many weekends (too many weekends if you saw my grades!) in oyster bars in the Florida panhandle along the Gulf Coast. I'd sit and drink beer and shoot the breeze with the shucker, watching him work and waiting for my next dozen slurpers, listening to the local country radio station or the Buffett cover band playing in the corner.

I'd be happy to spend, say, another year doing "research" on just such a knife. If some knife company wants to pay me as a design consultant on the project, please be in touch. :D

NFA, A frequent poster here has suggested his new framelock design "Chicken Biscuit" knife. As a companion piece, for all ocassions, I've offered my "Oyster Cracker" knife. IMO, they'd make a great combo !! No takers yet. :(

NFA,
Amen to the screwdriver trick for oysters. Still a good idea to hold 'em down w/ a folded up dish towel- they will slip from time to time & you don't want to get a screwdriver stuck in your hand/wrist...

If you file down the tip of a Spyderco Rescue Jr., you will have the equivalent of what you are talking about.

I don't think I would trust opening oysters with any sharpened blade. The screwdriver trick works well.

Screwdrivers???

We're looking for style points here gentlemen.

Whipping a stubby screwdriver out of your pocket as you are strolling the oyster beds doesn't make the same statement as rapidly deploying a custom folding oyster knife from your pocket.

I mean, heck, I could just bash the oyster with a rock, but that's not very civilized...

Just when we are getting the the meaning of a "Gent's Folder" or "Dress Knife" figured out; you come along wanting a "Gent's Oyster Folder!"

All humor aside, just whom are you trying to impress?;)
