I need a good saw for my sons trail pack. I am currently looking at the aplander 'the Kershaw and theBG /Gerber. I carry a sthi that works great but my son wants something different any ideas

Gerber/Fiskar makes a light weight pocket saws. The folding model can use a wood blade or a bone blade.

I hate to admit that I like anything french.

But I have an Opinel folding wood handled saw that looks like their knife - only larger.

It works well and if your not sawing larger than 5" stuff,it will suffice.

VERY light and easy to pack/carry

The two brands that are consistantly on top for recommendations is the laplander and the silky.

I've had great luck with the Kershaw/Bahco and the Corona ones you can find at Lowes.

There are Bahco folding saws easier to find (cheaper) than the Kershaw or Laplander, just make sure the blade has the tempered teeth and cuts on both the push and the draw just like the Laplander. I have one and really like it, use it out on my 5 acre plot all the time as well as take it camping.

I have a couple of the gerber folding saws. You can get it with two blades: fine tooth and coarse tooth. It has cut everything from hog/deer bones to small trees and shrubs. Lightweight and slim design.

I like the Bahco Laplander. Good steel, convenient size and locks in both the open and closed position.

i have a gerber (fiskars) folding saw. it's light weight, compact and works well.

I've had the same 9" Corona folding saw since I was 13. Snapped the tip off when I was little from improper use, but aside from that it's still going strong today. Used it yesterday in fact. :) Been thinking of getting something bigger for when I go trail clearing, but for normal hiking and backpacking this old Corona works great!! I carry the Corona in my Large backpacking pack.

Check out the SOG Hunter Revolver. It''s a fixed blade with Gut hook and the Tang is a Saw. I've had a Seal Revolver since they first came out in 2003 and got a Hunter revolver last year. The Hunter goes hiking with me. The full flat ground blade is great for all kinds of cutting and the saw blasts through wood really easily. IMO it's a great Survival/Camp knife and saw.

I've used more expensive ones but the Corona 10" from Lowes is one of the better ones that I've bought. I'm in the field grown nursery business and we do a lot of limbing up of our larger oaks and these are what I've equipped my guys with for the past fews years. In the past we've used Bahco, Felco, Silky and Sandvik. Frankly I've been more impressed with the Corona Blade than with any of the others. You just have to be careful about the nut on the pivot, I've lost one so far out of the six saws that I've bought. We do break the tips of the blades but that's often when we're cuttting crepe myrtles and dig them into the dirt.
