Folding Saws

Hi guys!
I am putting together an emergency kit to carry in the event that I get stuck someplace unexpectedly.
Because the world that we live in is rapidly becoming ruled by scum-bag liberals, I have concerns about carrying a large camp knife around in my gear. It seems that the knife laws have become such an incoherent mess of babbling bullshit that it is virtually impossible to carry a large fixed blade from juristiction to juristiction without running afoul of the law.
So, I am looking into the idea of a folding saw to augment my Sebenza and 5-1/2" custom fixed blade that Greg Covington is making for me. That way, I can still accomplish most any job without getting my ass tossed into jail.
I am looking into two basic types of saws: A full size saw with 15-18" blade for those times/places where space permits, and one of those little folding saws that look like a large folder with saw teeth instead of a knife blade.
Experience has taught me that quality is everything in a piece of equipment, and the only way to really know how something works is to get out there and use it.
Experience has also taught me to let other peoples' experience keep me from making stupid mistakes.
So, having said all that, can ya'll offer some opinions based on real world experience with these things? (as far as their usefulness, reliability and durability.) Please give me brand names and modes if at all possible.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and perhaps respond. "Sorry for being so long. Thanks, guys!

Fiskars makes a great little saw that has a finger screw that you loosen, then slide the blade out of the handle and tighten the hand screw. I bought 3 of them at Menards (lumber/home improvement store) for about $8.00 each. I use these for most all camp cutting and they work great. Don't let the cheap price discourage you from at least trying one of these. Menards also sells a great Fiskars hatchet in the lawn and garden section which is identical to the hatchets Gerber markets to hunters. The only difference is that the handle is partly flourescent orange instead of all black. I recommend one of these highly for your kit. I don't think a smallish hatchet would get someone in trouble and it is very capable for cutting limbs or small logs. These hatchets are only $20.00. I keep one of each in my truck.

I have been having good luck with a couple of Corona pruning saw like these -

Do a search for Silky Saws. They have a nice line of folding saws made with Swedish steel and replaceable blades which lock in two open positions. The handles are rubber covered aluminum and their prices are way to cheap for the quality of their products.I havn't found anything else that even comes close, sort of the "Sebenza" of folding saws.

Brommeland:

I just added a Spyderco saw to my kit as an adjunct to my baby Bruks hatchet. I have a feeling that this small saw blade could also do some mean defensive work as well, if required....

The Fiskar saw which has been mentioned is a little larger, a little heavier, but a gangbusters tool. (one lives in my vehicle kit)

Peace,

(a liberal who collects all kinds of beautiful knives, guns, etc.}

Do yourself a li'l favor and check out wyoming saws before you make your final decision. Seriously stout and there are two sizes that pack up into the slickest little packages. They take up very little room when they are in their packed-up state.

Rob:

Probably only bu Spyderco.....

However, I don't anticipate using this tool to fell large hickory trees... just wrist-size stuff for the Bruks to split down.

Check out the Folding Pocket Saw from Tashiro Hardware's site. It offers incremental handle angles and no-tools-required blade changes. It is the saw in the picture with the orange ends on it, which make it easier to spot when set down in camp or inadvertantly dropped among foliage.

There are different blades of varying tooth density (TPI) & shapes for working on green fresh wood in the woods/yard or cured & dried lumber in the woodshop that will fit the Tashiro saw. The blade shown on the following webpage with the handle cuts green wood pretty efficiently and leaves a smooth kerf when cutting dried lumber.

If you do a search here on BFC for the word "Tashiro" you'll find threads where this saw has been discussed before, including some fairly extensive testing.

(edited to add) Rob, thanks for the link to Silky Saws. They have some interesting looking items there. :)

I would recommend the Trailblazer Takedown Bucksaw

I got one on suggestion from my brother-in-law, who goes moose hunting and takes one with him. Sturdy for a "folding saw" packs up to take up almost no room (everything slides into the larger handle piece) and cuts like mad. I dunno how the edge retention is on the blade, but it cut through a decent sized fallen tree fairly readily. Just don't know if it would hold up to building a log cabin ;) They should be less than $20 USD. I've seen them with aluminum and steel handles.

Hope that helps.

Shaun.

Gentlemen,
Thank you all for taking the time to help me out. I've always heard that ya'll were a great bunch of guys, and it's true. This forum rocks! Thanks again !

The Corona Saw work's very well on green and dry wood, 2x4's no problem . For an emergency bag would go for the Stanley saw with Bi-metal Sawzz All blade's . That way you cover Urban and Outdoor's

i saw a spydersaw the other day at a knife shop, and it looked pretty capable. i will probably get one in time. as far as replacability, i would ask on the spyderco forum. i think that thing could probably provide a lifetime of service without blade replacement, and spyderco is known to have superior customer service, so it's probably a no-lose situation if you get one.
