Hi. I didn't see a listing for this so here goes.
Since folding saws are becoming popular for hunters and survivalists. I am curious as to if there are any custom or high quality folding saws out there?
I have a few of these saws. All are stainless and very thin, which is a bit of a problem, normally a common construction or wood saw has between 2.5 and 8 inches tall of actual blade. The problem with the thin stainless folding say blades is that they flex too much and once bent they don't get unbent particularly well and requires an hour in the oven at 500 deg F. You can't really fix it in the woods without snapping it.
I was wondering if there are any good quality carbon steel (thick 1/8 or 3/16") folding saws out there?
The teeth patterns vary from closely nit fang like teeth to more conventional wood saw. My gerber gator has the fang type and cuts fast so long as you put as little pressure on the blade as possible.
I honestly can't see much or a weight gain with a 1/8" thick blade instead of the 1/32" of my gator.
A saw blade with so little height would need to be more rigid and have a automobile leaf spring like flexability.
I was thinking of 1084, 1095, 5160 carbon steels with a decent anodized paint job.
I am all for stainless steel but apart form the trail blazer sawpreme i have not seen much else decent in stainless steel saw blades.
I have made a prototype folding saw out of a saw blade from a telescopic tree pruner. Nice but a little large if you've ever see what they look like.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
