A while back, I started a thread about my wish that GEC would come out with an ideal "dedicated slicer": http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Pattern-Suggestion-quot-Dedicated-Slicer-quot I mentioned that my #74 Saddle Trapper fit the bill except for the uncomfortable grip caused by the second blade. Some of the posters mentioned that Bob (BigBiscuit) had commissioned glennbad to mod his similar 2012 Forum Knife by removing the wharnie. Bob then posted pics of the finished product and I liked it!

So, long story short is that Glenn kindly agreed to perform similar surgery on my #74, and he did a great job! The result is a slim, lightweight (2.4 oz.), and very comfortable-in-the-hand "dedicated slicer". Glenn was able to preserve the original Coffeehouse Acrylic scales, which I think are beautiful. He even managed to keep the remaining clip well centered. And I can't say enough about what a pleasure it was to do business with Glenn --- a true gentleman as well as a skilled craftsman.

Thanks, Glenn, for making this small wish come true.

Looks great, Glenn does great work, if you search the threads you'll find some excellent examples of his work.

Looks great! Northwoods Madison Barlow might also be another good option if you eat a little more length. Similar pattern.

Andrew That's a very satisfying outcome  Recently, Glenn fixed a knife up for me which has pleased me no end. I like stainless and my GEC 73 in it came with two large blades making it heavy, thick and uncomfortable to use and carry. It was just gathering dust but I like the bone very much and longed for a single-blade version. GEC is parsimonious with its 440c offerings so the wait became intolerable. :( I asked a couple of people but they didn't seem confident of dismantling the knife without breaking the bone. Glenn took on the challenge and sent back to me a knife I can use and be very proud of. Good man!

I don't mind 2 blade knives when the secondary is smaller but not two the same size. So now everything is fixed and to paraphrase Orwell's Animal Farm "Two blades good, one blade better!" In this case at least :D

Thanks, Will

Thanks for the comments, gents.

Will, glad to hear of your #73 440C resurrection. When you have a chance, please post full length pics of it!

That looks great. Your thread Urged me to do the same to my 74 in cocobolo. I love that this pattern is pinchable and a 15 clip point is just a little short for splitting apples at time. Mine is in works. Your pics look great and assure I did the right thing. I contemplated selling it. I'm glad you convinced me not to. Thanks.

I really enjoyed working on this knife, the acrylic was a great material and looks great. Here's a few more pics.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Cyclops Steel used to have a Mill in Titusville where they made Stainless Steel. At some point, I think before, it was called Titusville Iron Works. The GEC Factory is located in one of the old Mill buildings, the old Physical Testing Lab I think. You will only see the Cyclops Steel stamp on GEC's Stainless Steel Blades.

I love thinner grinds.

On of the things I love about traditional knives is that they cut so well. On the whole, they are excellent slicers.

Nice job on the mod.

Great job, Glenn. Impressive. I trust even on the acrylics GEC pins the shield? Surprised it didn't chip out there upon removal/reinstallation. Must be fairly durable stuff.

I've got one of these w' the saber grind blade and haveoften thought I'd like/prefer a full flat grind.

Just like Will, for my taste (and need), two main blades are more hassle than good, especially on these largeish frames.
Both mods look great to me, and I've often wondered about getting the same job done on a GEC #74 or #73.
By Glenn of course ;)

Glenn,

Thanks for the post and pics, and thanks again for a great job on my #74!

This knife is a totally different critter now, and IMHO a great improvement in looks, comfort, and practicality vs. the original.
