While I won't debate the newer style is superior with regard to hardware, the old style is really easy to use once you get used to it.
Also, the lock release is in front of the knife where you cannot accidently fold it up.
The drawback of the older model is the spring that applies tension to the lock is more likely to fail and is shaped in an odd fashion. The new Pioneer replaces it with a traditional coil spring.
Personally, I prefer the looks of the old style Pioneer over the new one.
Bob Taylor was kind enough to supply me with a few spare springs for my 3 old style Pioneers and I feel like I'm fixed for life.
I'm waiting delivery of a Carnivore and am excited about the new lock on this model.
However, I'm going to keep the old Pioneers as I see no substantial reason to replace them.
I sure like REKAT's products. My utility neck knife is one tough dude, and the black-T coating is very thickly applied and durable.

Bill,

I agree with you about the ol' style Pioneers! I have two of them: one has the dreaded ball detent and the other used the rolling lock to hold blade shut. It took me a little while to get use to the lock, but I like the little lever and I am LEFT-HANDED! I depress it and swing the blade shut: who said the the ol' rolling lock wasn't an one handed knife?! I have to call Bob late next week and may be he can spare a couple of springs for me. I handled a new Pioneer II and I like it, too.

I picked up a couple of th REKAT neck knives and I like them a lot - not flashy, but for the money and quality of the coating you can't beat it. Some one told me about REKAT, otherwise I would never had heard of the company: he also sent me the URL for Blade Forum, too!

I would like to pick up a left-handed Carnivore or Sifu

Like I NEED another knife, but simple things bring great pleasure to our lives.

Maddog,
Josh Burbank at PVK&T was the first person to carry the REKAT line (I think), as he had them over two years ago. He told me that they were tough dudes.
I got my first Pioneer when Jim Neil (remember Broken Arrow ??) force-fed me one.
He paid attention to my preferences and knew what I liked. He insisted I order one and offered to buy it if I was not completely satisfied.
Since that time I have picked up a clip and drop point.
I love these knives and really USE them.

The only thing so far that I do not like about the Carnivour is the release lever. It is plastic and no more than I have opened and closed the knife it is already wearing down. Is anyone else having this same trouble?

I just traded for a Drop point old style lock Pioneer. I can't wait to get it. Are the springs really that likely to fail? I have heard nothing but good from these knives, so I thought that I had to have one.

BH,
There were inconsistancies in some of REKAT's spring stock about a year and a half ago.
I had three failures in two separate knives.
The double failure involved spring stock from a distributor, and the single failure was a Pioneer from the same era and distributor.
The problems went away when I obtained more recent spring stock directly from REKAT.
Maybe Bob will make spare springs available to us for the "ole style" Pioneers. They are VERY easy to install as you only remove one scale.
Bill

Hmmm..., come to think of it, I still have 3 old style Pioneers. I'd better e-mail REKAT about the springs. I never use any of them, but I don't want to find out the hard way.
