Food/Water Rotation

My water consists of bottled water, dated to use by 8/07, and canned foods. I've been rotating my food and water about every 8 to 12 months. Is that to often or not often enough? Also on a separate note, I'm looking to add some food to my vehicle kit, but I need something that the temperature extremes of West Texas won't easily destroy. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

We rotate our food out about every 10 months, but it isn't much, because we use out of it on a daily basis and replace. Water doesn't last that long, as we use it daily and replentish once a week, along with the food used.

Temperature extremes will even kill MREs, so maybe something like dehydrated meals, or dry foods like parched corn.

Our supplies are mostly canned goods, rice and beans. The cans are good for about a year and if we don't use them up we donate them to the food bank (any cans that don't look right are tossed). The rice and beans are vacuumed sealed and should last up to 5 years - we haven't had them that long, so we're still learning.

I'm just now eating rice I stored away for Y2K! It's prefectly fine and was kept in a sealed food grade bucket that I got from a bakery. Get the buckets that store icing or filling. They have rubber seals on them and it kept my rice in good condition for 5 years. I also store emergency supplies in my basement which stays about 65 degrees year round.

I rotate canned food yearley and what I don't consume I donate to the local food bank or church food drive so everyone gets a taste.

I have those Coast Guard approved food ration bars in my vehicle kits and they are supposed to last through extremes in environment. They taste kind of like a shortbread and they aren't supposed to promote thirst. That may be someting to think about for those hot Texas days.
