She wants something for self-defense... She walks to work in the dark sometimes and apparently there are some creepyer type guys on the way.
I said fixed blade knife(she wants a fixed blade), flashlight, and/or pepper spray. What are your suggestions? I said maybe esse izula and a stream light with about 200 lumens.

O-light M21 warrior has 500 lumens, instant strobe button and crenelated bezel.

I personally wouldn't recommend a knife for self defense for a lady unless she is trained to use it. I don't mean that in a sexist way, it's just a much higher chance of it being taken away and used against her because she will most likely be against a larger and stronger opponent. (This would be true for the average man too. )

I'm not an expert, but my choice would be the tactical flashlight and pepper spray. Maybe some self defense lessons too.

I agree with Jet B on this one. Unless trained specifically for edged weapons, I think your friend would be better off with the flashlight and pepper spray. However, if your friend feels the need for something more, I would recommend having her get her concealed weapons permit, and purchasing and training with a solid and reliable firearm that she feels comfortable with.

I apologize if this is off topic concerning the OP's original question, but it is a viable option for self defense and assuming that your friend is in S.C., acquiring a CWP is quite easy.

Yeah, a gun would be ideal if it can be legally carried and she is trained and willing to use it.

It's actually surprising how effective a good tactical flashlight can be when used in a dark area and the strobe setting. Enough to create confusion and pepper spray or run anyway. I just suggest a very bright light and one that you can access the strobe function instantly.

I think a big part of defense is prevention. IOW try NOT to walk to work in the dark if possible. Alter your route to miss areas that are suspect. Walk away from places where people could hide in the dark. If you see people on your route then go out of your way to avoid them.

And then carry a big gun too.

If you must walk unarmed through bad areas, then carry the best pepperspray you can carry.

I have to agree, and also suggest that there are videos and books covering awareness, responding to the 'interview', and avoidance that might be helpful in her situation. Most describe scenarios and outcomes that make you think how you would have reacted, and having the knowledge is better than any tool that you don't carry, can't get to, or forgot you had. I don't know about this person, but some people just drop a small pepper spray in the purse and think they are magically protected. A little time with resources like "Strong on Defense" and the nononsenseselfdefense website (I'm sure both have their critics) will help her make the decision that is best for her.

Looks like I talked her into some form of kershaw folder, pepper spray, and a stream light protact or the like.
