I come to you all for help again. This time for a friend. My buddy was admiring my ASH1LE when we were on a trip this weekend. He couldn't get over the feel of the knife and how sharp it is and how well it held the edge through the weekend of use. He wants to try Busse but he is looking for something small that he can keep on his side or in his pocket for work. He does not want a folder of any make.

I have ZERO small Busse's. Only mid sized and up. So a little back story he is a plumber and is not loaded with cash so any hard to find choices will be ruled out immediately. He will use the knife for everything but does not need an overkill bombproof fat stubby knife.

So from the guys that have experience with the smaller Busse blades, which like I said I have none of and have never really looked into, what would be a few suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Kevin

I am going through Busse Collector now and here are some knives I find interesting for his purpose:

Anorexic AS
All of the Wardens

But that is really it due to overall length. Maybe I am off on what is comfortable to toss in your pocket? Anyhow I just wanted to add this.

I really like an Active Duty for everyday chores. Great ergonomics and he should be able to get a used one for ~$200.00 give or take.

Any Warden could do it ... some are thinner, some fatter.

Should also at least look at the SAR3. It's a good knife and not really much bigger.

A BAD or thin Active Duty could also be a good choice.

Might at least consider the Cultellis.

The SAR3 is a decent choice because of the currently high availability. But there is the risk of getting one of them that slipped through with bad edge geometry.

I would go with a BAD. It is a really special knife with the higher hardness.

No risk, really. The Shop will take it back and fix that geometry, no questions asked. Trust me on this.:)

Yeah, I just got mine back from the shop last week... and the new edge was pretty good. Significantly better.

Thanks a lot so far for the ideas. And to OP I appreciate the Sar 3 comparison. For some reason I overlooked it.

As far as edges from the factory they can send me one blunt and I will sharpen it. I'm looking for design, comfort in both use and carry. Stuff like that :) I do appreciate your concern though.

The AD is my choice, for all the reasons mentioned above. That being said, I carry a Skelly Warden in my pocket every day because I like the way it rides without the scales.

I've considered taking the scales off an AD to see how that works, but haven't tried it yet.

For a smaller knife the higher Rc setting is a real "benefit" in my eyes and that is based on a lot of comparisons and testing to sort out for myself what works best ....
thinner geometry and the ability to hold an edge whilst being thin through the harder Rc heat treatment gives a noticeable performance advantage .... for the straight forward small knife tasks .... i.e. none prybar uses

The harder the setting .... the less the edge will "roll" .... not ideal for avoiding chipping ... but if we are talking small knife normal "uses" .... then the benefit is there .... it's "horses for courses" and for cutting this "mix" is the best I have found ...

I also like the AD. Its a very usable size, but at the upper edge of what I would drop in my pocket. Mine rides almost unnoticed in a belt sheath. If you want something a little smaller, I don't go anywhere without a Swamp Warden in my left pocket. Mine is cord wrapped in a BuyBrown kydex necker.

That's why Jaxx's Crazy Competition blade suggestion of a Skeletonized AD is so awesome. It would so be cool.

I get a lot of carry time for my GW (.22) and just picked up another BAD (had one that I traded toward a bigger piece of infi because I was not crazy about the color combo).

The higher hardness is noticeable. Stays sharper longer than the GW. Slices great also. Sucker is thin, and I mean pointy stabby thin!

Regular AD should do him great, and be a bit less expensive. I think the standard thickness is somewhere around .18 or a bit more.

I would love one of those as well.

The Sar3 is decent in my hand as well. I would have to break the edges of some of the machined handle (back of the handle). This would take about 6 minutes with either a fingernail file (the sand paper kind), or regular sandpaper.

Also, not to overlook the meaners and the SS's. If he is doing a lot of cutting of hoses, zip ties etc the SS's work great. There are frequently great deals to be had on these. I loved mine, and am thinking that another one would be great. The Meaners also give you a bit more blade length.

I pocket carried a SS for over a year. Pocket clip sheath I made worked great. Just enough of the handle poking out that it is not concealed. Fit just fine in all my pants pockets length wise. Of course I don't own any girlymanpants with tiny pockets.

Just some food for thought.
