For a user, Queen or Schatt & Morgan?

I'm looking at the large toothpicks. If I can't come up with a tattoo design that calls out to me I'm going to ask for a knife for my approaching birthday. I like the looks of the File and Wire Tested in ATS-34 with the burnt jigged bone. But it's going into my pocket and not a safe. Would I be better off getting the Quen in D2? I don't have any experience with D2 or ATS-34 (I have a lot of carbon steel), how do they compare in cutting ability? Is the S&M substantially nicer than the Queen? Thanks.

Frank,
I bought two of the AG Russell toothpicks that were used from their Cutting edge auction. They were returns that the MOP scales had been broken & repaired. At retail they are pricy, but I am really impressed with them compared to Queen. The blades are 154CM.

Look at them HERE.

I bought 1 Queen in D-2, and will never do it again. It didn't come particularly sharp from the factory and after a FULL hour on the sharpmaker, I noticed little improvement in the edge. I've been unable to sharpen D-2, unless I go to a diamond hone. I think this would be fine if the knife was delivered sharp, but it's just too much of hassle for me with a "user" knife to justify D-2. ATS-34 is a great all around steel and I STILL order alot of custom pieces in ATS-34, particularly in higher end knives, since I think it finishes nicer than S30V.

Hi Marcangel, I wouldn't give up on the Queen. D2 is a very tough steel to sharpen but it holds an edge like no other.

I would just take down the edge with a diamond stone, waterstones (or SiC sandpaper backed by glass) freehand first and once you get the angle lower than the 40 degrees of the sharpmaker, everything will become easy. It will only take 10 minutes to do on a course stone, but may take forever on the fine stones of the sharpmaker.

I had exactly the same problem with my Queen D2 canoe.

I picked up a Queen Stockman in D2 (jigged cherry delrin), and wow! VERY nice blade, beautifully done! The sharpness indeed is nothing to write home about, I wouldn't call it dull, but not very sharp.

I put it on my Edgepro, it didn't take any longer to fix than 1095, Carbon V, or AUS 8. But does it ever hold an edge! I whittled some soft wood (seasoned aspen) for almost a half an hour, and it just barely lost it's hair popping edge. 6 licks on the steel, and it was back. Very impressive!

The only complaint that I have is that the sheepsfoot blade is bent to fit into the handle, but it's not just a bend at the base, the WHOLE blade is bowed. This made sharpening quite a pain, the edge angle varies along the blade.

Other than that, this is a gorgeous knife, now I want more Queens in D2!

My Queen D2 (Utility Pen Knife) came in fairly dull condition. It required some work with the diamond rods in my Sharpmaker to get the profile set right. After using the other two sets of rods, the blade was beautiful. The D2 really holds an edge! I'll be buying more D2 Queens in the future, for sure.

Good luck with your choice,
Bob Scott

Some good thoughts.
I am a big fan of the D2 Queens and Schatt & Morgan stuff. The S&M is going to have better fit and finish (almost to nice to use) and might come out of the box a little sharper, but I like the Queens with D2 as users much more. I don't think you will regret picking either one or one from A.G. Russell.

Mo gave one one of A.G. Russell's scale release lock-backs a while back although the steel is not D2 or ATS 34 it is certainly a very fine and well made knife.

If the S & M's have better fit and finish, then I'm going to have to look at them. Compared to my other stockmans, the Queens were just beautiful. The S & M's must be pretty nice, indeed!
