How many of you would agree that going with a standard handle materials on models are the best choice for user pieces?

I've been into Randalls for a long time. But, I'm still hesitant about sending in a block of jade G10 for a #14 that would be used.

Thanks

I don't have a problem with putting some of the more exotic handle materials on "users," but then again, I'm not getting any younger, and most of my knives don't really see hard use any more. If you don't mind spending the extra money, I'd say "go for it."

I prefer leather for a user because I feel I get a better grip. It's just that you have to be more careful about not letting it get too wet or too dry for any length of time. G10 or Micarta is pretty much worry free. Stag under hard use is prone to crack.

Best,

The only complaint that I have with my Mod 14 and it is really not a complaint, is the finger grooves sometime are a little difficult. The micarta is fine with me and I blued the blade. I really like this knife and it travels well on the App Trail with my dog and Scout Troop.

Hope you enjoy your new RMK with whatever you choose.

Raf,

You wrote 'How many of you would agree that going with a(sic) standard handle materials on models are the best choice for user pieces?'

Not me, I'm with 'Sam' on this one; I'm not getting any younger (and I can't take 'em with me); if I diminish my potential return by a few hundred just for taking a 'minty' early '50's #8 w/options on a hiked-in fishing trip up to a pristine lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and actually use it as intended--well then, so be it...lol

I say 'use what cha brung', and if that just-so-happens to be a RMK with a non-standard handle material, more power to ya!

Hey, Shel.

Been a chunk of time.

Good point and I completely agree. It's just that I'm getting some mixed feedback on the jade G10 on a Randall. One member on another Randall forum had the handle crack after a fall to the soft ground. And, there's an auction on the bay right now that shows a full tang RMK with a jade G10 that has a line crack in it and the fitting isn't the greatest.

Just thinking out loud, I guess.

Use it or loose it! My user Randall is a #5-6 pined ebony handle,,,,, I use a Sullivan sheath afield though.... I've had newer #5's, #8's,#16's and #1's. It's a great feeling to strap that baby on, and know it's there , and won't let you down..... If you hurt it, that means you probably really needed it badly! Bart1
