*warning on the "huge" pics - by huge i mean 2560x1920, or 5 megapixels. the file sizes are from about 1.2 megs to 1.7 megs each, so if you on a 56kbps connection, they may take quite a while to load.*

ALIass asked for pics of a black paper micarta ad, and I thought that was what I was getting, but instead a got a very pleasant surprise with a tank buster style handle instead of straight black. Im not sure what type of micarta it is, or wether it is the black handle slabs or not, but im impressed through and through :D

Bought it from matt ceriale, whos one hell of a guy to do business with :) im not used to using phone calls over emails as ive grown accustomed to the cold wasteland that is the internet, but it definitely shows a high level of professionalism to keep contact with buyers on a personal level. Many thanks to matt, and if you ever see a sale from him your interested in, you have my recommendation :)

It came with the busse brown leather sheath, and a leatherman (im pretty sure) black horizontal carry sheath, which I modified for vertical carry. The modification is just a folded strap of seatbelt that has stitching to form 3 loops, one for regular cary, one for high rise carry, and one to hold it to the bottom of the sheath. Using the high rise, the sheath can be carried inside the pants (though the knife draws backwards).

Im using the leatherman sheath because its such a tighter fit. Im I pretty big fan of the secondary secureing points, so having open leather that fits tightly is better then open leather that's loose. Id kinda like to have a strap to lock around the handle, but there isn't really anything to connect a snap lock to, unless I wore the sheath lower... Hmmmmmmm... I might just do that later on...

the questions:
how do you clean bead blasted infi? there are very small spots of discoloration along the main grind, and i was wondering if there was a way to remove them? im not sure if its a stain, a slight change in the surface compostion, or what... should i basically wait until it gets bad enough, and then rebeadblast it?

the tube fastener closest to the index finger on my ad has a brassier tone then the one near the pommel, and i was just wondering, are the silver tube fasteners a different metal then the brass ones, or are they just coated silver?

also, what angle should i sharpen the assymetrical edge to keep it around 21 degrees? should i just sharpen both at 21, and stop the one side? (are they both the same angle, just one has more metal shaved off, or are the two angles different?)

when i heard that the ad's came in snakes skin nukarta, or black micarta, i was expecting straight black, wich is very far from the case with the one i got. the on i got is more or less identical ot the micarta type found on the tank buster seen at blade west, a sort of tapestry of muted browns and moss greens and blacks. really, REALLY bueatiful :D (even my mon said so :) as well as my boss, and 3 of my coworkers :) :D). from the picture of the onewhobuys christmas haul found at badmojo, it seems like there were black handle slabs available for the ad, so that would mean that there were snakeskin, mossgreen/brown, and black????? if there are black, does anyone have pics of one??

just adding the buffalo soldier/active duty/assault shaker/quarter comparison pic for posterity.

a lot of time and effort into your post bud!

And very enjoyable, I need to get a 5mpx digital me thinks!

I think I saw the Lunar Lander in there somewhere!

It seems like some kind of canvas micarta but I have no idea as to the nomenclature.

Hey Seth, Can you send me some smaller pics of the sheath and knife? I am a poor fella on dialup and cant afford to sit the ten minuts.

Soooooo, theres like synthetic stuff on one of my sheaths?????? Though its good to see that design still holds the knife firmly after some use, guess thats why they call it cowdex eh?:p

Synthetic stuff on leather, grumble grumble grumble........... :p :barf: :p All in good humor of course!

In all seriousness, I can put the X loop on the back of that one to make it to where it can be worn either way, no charge. Its a new thing that one of us came up with to solve the multi carry problem on such a small sheath.

the nikon coolpix 5700 is a hell of a camera :) im hoping ill be able to upgrade to the sony f818 when it comes out...

here are the small pics of the sheath that i posted above-

each of those pictures has a max size of 400x300 pixels, and are around 80kb's, so they should take more then a minute to load each. (same to the ones below)

if you want me to send you pictures via email, i can do that:) i can also post the huge pics of these as well, if anyones interested. im leaving them small do to their already being detailed shots of the sheath, and these are just for showing the design instead of detail.

as to getting it redone in leather to aid the additional carry method, to be honest i only really want vertical, and i have a thing for seatbelt:)

heres a picture of my rucksack that has a seatbelt skeleton sewn into the inside of it, as well as seatbelt reinforced shoulder straps. this thing was such a horror to sew... pockets all over the place to resew shut, 3 feet deep of heavy denear canvas, with seatbelt making it even stiffer and harder to fold over... totaly worth the effect though...

heres some more views of the seatbelt attachment, and 6 of its multi carry possibilities *you can hang it upside down in several of these positions*

2 shots of the belt loops, and how their on the sheath... kind of... its a pretty simple set up, took me about 4 minutes to sew together.

Hmm, those pics make me want an AD real bad! I wish I had the money!!!! I think that little knife just moved to the top of my want list.

Hey Jerry, what are the chances of getting an AD in .25" thickness???

Cool rig you made, sure do hope you left a seatbelt in your car!

i did :). though i kinda wish they had black at the place i bought it from - http://www.atrim.com/Page96.html

i could have gone all fancy and gotten green and what not, but my stuff is meant for urban carry, so flash next to your knife.... isnt really a good idea... even though my area is pretty lenient on what you can carry in the open, bright red knife sheaths arent the best idea  :( ;)

i bought a 35 yard roll of the charcoal webbing, and still have about 70% of it left after the stuff ive made with it so far. (i ordered over the phone), and they got it to me within a week and a halfs time.

great stuff.....

the active duty is AWESOME!!. best busse i own :D :D :D. everything i had against the buffalo soldier was fixed in this knife. the handle feels ultra secure (the curve at the back fits perfect into the hand), it gets rid of any extra size from the generation 3 handles, leaving only one pposition for (no choke up or choke down space), but also makeing it
super utilitarian. the blade is very VERY pointy, and the overall thing feels much sturdier then the buffalo soldier.... also much lighter. i beleive when i weighed it at work, the buffalo soldier was about 8 ounces, and the active duty was around 5.1 oz. compared to other severe hollow grinds ive seen, this is pretty straight, and maintains a really keen edge while giving the strong feeling of a flat grind. the added full spine thickness area makes a heck of a difference in how strong the knife looks and feels...

and its goergious!!! the handles are like an oil painting on canvas... seriously, they are! even my mom says so!! ( :D seriously, she does)

just reread your post asking for pics, did you mean actually send you a disc (cd) of them? (wich i would be quite willing to do, if thats what you meant :) )

the small pic links that are posted under each of the "huge" picture links should load pretty fast... only about 2 of them are more then 100kb's

Thanks buddy! Nah, I just needed to view smaller pics because of the crappy dial up here (lucky to see 28.8) :barf: and I have a 56k modem. Thanks much for getting the smaller ones done there!:D looks like a mighty fine job ya did there. The key to the art is being able to modify something to better fit your needs and you did that well. Those are some detailed pics as well, even with the lower resolution they were crisp and clear. Well done!:)

thats the 5700 doing most of the work on the pics :)

anyone wanna weigh in on the questions?

mainly, what angle should an active duty assymetrical edge be sharpened at to keep it assymetrical? (is there a difference on each side?)

and do the fasteners rust/corrode?

Heh, was gonna get that last night, forgot!:o The edge grind on that one is symetrical, a convex if I'm not mistaken (that happens occasonally;) ) Use the ol fine sandpaper and either leather or mousepad under.

I have a couple of my users with the brass tubes starting to turn greenish, a good rub with a Q-tip coated with any brass cleaner should work. I was always to the assumption that the silver tubes were aluminum, it'll still oxidize though, same treatment. Anyone feel free to blow this outta the water for me!:p

According to the pics I have from the site, the scales for the beadblest (combat grade) AD were indeed canvas micarta, layered black and grey, really neat effect when carved.

As for the marks, the only way to fix a beadblasted blade is to re-blast. Its simple for a fellow with a small blasting rig and similar size beads to blast a small area. And yep theres several different sizes of beads, be careful.

THANK YOU!!:D :D

when i resharpen it, ill do a 4-6 bevel edge with my edgepro apex, and then use my hand american pro-deluxe-combo set to smooth out the curve and leather hone it.

however, the edge is definitely to one side on this one... its expecially visible in the tip.

*all pics are below 400x... and below 100kb's*

http://www.imagestation.com/mypictu...4.jpg.orig.jpg&caption=dscn1129&id=4200897828

the camera was within 1/4 inch of being the same distance from the comparison shot, so the size of the edge is pretty accurate.

their both convex (as far as i can tell), just that the sterile side is shorter, and the edge is moved over to the right (holding blade away from body). should both sides be sharpened at the same angle?

THANK YOU SETH, YOU DA MAAAANNNN!!! If your ever in Denmark, look me up, I owe you a cold one...:D
