I have it from the highest authority (Mr. Claus himself) that there will be a 15 inch Wetterlings Scout hatchet in my stocking on Christmas. Now I couldn't help but thinking how great this thing would look paired up to some green micarta scales with orange liners... and then cruising around the typical knife supplier websites I realized that ESEE offers the 3 and 4 in OD and ORANGE! But... alas I don't fit their handles. If you were to pair up this beautiful hatchet with a bushcrafter in the 100 dollar range, which knife/maker would it be with? If you've got pics of blades with forest green/orange combo, I'd be obliged if you could throw them up.

Well Andy has done some nice handles in Green and orange, and Bryan will gladly add orange to anything you want :)

Check out the-knife-connection, they make some aftermarket handles for the ESEE 3 and 4 that might fit the bill.

I would be looking at john at JK knives (may be just a bit over budget but close) and probably bryan breeden. both makes would definitely hook you up with a great blade.

RocketBomb, I was on their website last night and it seems like a fantastic deal. It doesn't seem to mention if the make-your-own-blade deal comes with the sheath etc. I may be spending all of my Christmas money on Bryan blades :D

I didn't need to know about that! The exposed pommel spike was the only thing keeping me from owning an ESEE 3! Thanks a heap

;)

Yeah I'm having him build a beastly 10 inch chopper for me. It's a slight drop point with a good working tip and biiiig belly, uniform thickness throughout. 3/16ths wide blade, and I'm going to blue it I think. Swept indexed handle with OD Micarta, eventually I'll do a dremel-texture on it. Exposed tang with lanyard. Still thinking of a name, though I think Neandertalis is the frontrunner at the moment. I ran a bushcraft design past him to fit this particular need, and he likes it, though still deciding between that, a Model 1 Gray Wolf bushcrafter and a customized ESEE-4. Choices, choices.... :D

Here's the ultimate chopper sketch.

Pretty sweet Payette!!!! That looks alot like Carney C's "G-Zilla"? Yea, i think Bryan Breeden's the man!!! Your design would be a chop-monster for sure!

Different blade profile and no guard, no choil, drop point versus clip, etc. It was actually the T-REX of PMOORE that influenced this guy. It started as a non-recurved T-REX that I thought would make a good combat survival knife, then decided on a saber vs. flat grind. After I drew it out, I thought man, that handle style would look beastly on a good chopper... gave the handle a curve towards the pommel for chopping leverage and sketched out a hefty 10 inch blade. No dedicated choil, but a contoured ricasso and hilt from the micarta to allow for choking up if need be. Exposed tang for bashing stuff if necessary. I've got maybe 15 different sketches drawn up stemming off of the Paul Moore T Rex. The current name is Neandertalis but that is subject to change.

I like the indexing on the handle design, the integral guard and the wide blade profile. I really like wide blades. Not only does it add sturdiness and inherent big belly, but also adds some weight to the knife without thickening the spine. IMO, more weight means more stability when processing materials, especially with cold shaky hands.

I'd not seen another of P Moore's knives before. The knife that came to my mind immediately was one he made for Carney C posted here:

Your's definitely looks like it would have a nice weight-forward cast to it for chopping activities as well as a nice, straight edge in a draw-knife role. A nice, hefty blade will definitely "steady" a cold hand (and the work being done will warm up the body!!!).

On my design, I've not decided what grind to use, though leaning toward a high-flat grind or a Sabre-grind like yours (though i'm unsure of the difference between a high-flat and sabre grind).

I've currently got a diamond cutter for an orange gripped ESEE 4. But hanging tough for the Becker 16's. May not be able to hold out, we'll see.

fmajor, that's the GZilla, the blade profile isn't as wide, it has a dedicated choil whereas mine doesn't and mine is drop point versus clip point. It also has no guard. The GZilla is an amazing design though, if PMoore weren't so backed up I might have gone that route a while ago. Upnorth, I hear ya-the green/orange combo is amazing on that ESEE-4. Apparently the Knife Connection build-your-own deal doesn't come with a sheath unfortunately, so going that route would cost significantly more than a factory one. It's all still up on the air, a Grey Wolf No. 1 is another option in the 100 dollar pricerange.

P.R.

Nice drawing! I think that would make a fine chopper. 3/16 blade, and all that forward weight. Should be very fast.

Have you thought about the saber grind, and a convex edge?

Paul

A convex microbevel would set the whole thing off for sure-if they don't come that way they generally wind up getting profiled to a happy convex on an arkansas softstone. I'd have called you about this bad boy but last time I heard, you were backed up at least a year :( I'll get my hands on a T Rex some day... It's tough being in college and knowing that far out if I'll have cash on hand or not so I feel bad placing an order that far in advance. It sure would make for a great middle man when combined with this chopper and a Becker Necker. I'll have to upload some more designs that you inspired to see what you think. Do you have any new styles out that you haven't thrown up on your website?

Really, I have been blessed with orders, but the wait time is running around 5 months for larger knives.

As far as new styles, not really, I have a few variations people want to see, and the odd one now and again,

By the way, I don't require anything up front, so you can start a cookie jar. :D

Looking forward to your revisions.

Paul

the oe ESEE handles didn't fit my hands that well, the knife connections one fit much better
