For all you Ek 5 fans..

It would be nice to think they are going to maintain something of the quality of the originals, but I doubt there is any real link to the founder of the company, other than someone having bought rights to the name.

I have a couple of 3's, one with green para cord wrap, and the other micarta, VERY good blades. They are older ones. I wonder how the new steel will do. Before I moved to the PRK, I carried one or the other in my truck as a "just in case" knife. They came with the sharpest edges I have ever seen on a factory knife. If I were going in harm's way, these would be my choice of a FB to take along.

It IS Richmond, VA, so same as the Eks before Effingham (which are notorious for not so great fit and finish), and should have good quality. Too bad John Ek's son isn't really into this

How does having an office address in Richmond, VA, guarantee quality?

When I looked last, the rights to the "EK" name were jointly owned, half by a company that makes "commemorative" knives -- you know, the ads in the back of the gun mags -- D-Day Commemorative With Genuine Gold Detailing.

Has a different entity taken over?

Where are the knives made?

What is HSC1718 steel. I get zero hits on Google.

This could be good or less than good. Time will tell.

Thomas,

I seem to remember reading that HSC1718 is some kind of tool steel.

I handled a couple new production Ek's at the last gun show I attended, and I agree with a previous poster, they were among the sharpest knives I've ever handled.

It's better that they are sharp than otherwise. The question, of course, is, "Do they hold an edge." Hopefully, they do.

Doesn't "EK" say HSC1718 is stainless?

As I recall, "The Richmond Shop" is run by the same people who worked for John Ek and his son after they left the business. I specualte that it happened this way... John's son sold some of the rights and left the business whatever he didn't sell, the crew kept on producing. The Post 93 Richmond stuff that the custom factory was making was some of the best knives I have ever seen... Much much better than any Effingham offering. If the quality is the same today as it was back then, 250 per knife is a great deal.

Last time I visited him, I counted 50 Ek #5's from various factories, with a beater Effingham that's freakishly sharp (with crap grind lines) and a beautiful lot of NIB Richmond ones that are pretty damn perfect with great F&F

what's the #5, there's only a couple pics (coulda sworn the site had way more a couple years ago)

Great, I am a big EK fan and collector there's only 1 or 2 from the old Richmonds that I dont have....its great that this is happenin.

I believe that the Richmond shop, although making knives marketed by some commemorative company has a much stronger connection to John Ek than BlackJack or Expedition Knives which is a poor attempt to use the Ek name in a loophole fashion.

I got one original optional leather sheath... I don't seem to be able to find any more. What's your experience with them?

They don't have any pictures except for this page...

I remember buying two EK Aussi Bowie knives about ten years ago and the quality was fairly poor. Grind lines didn't match and the edge was as cheaply done as on a $6 hatchet from home depot.

I always like the design of the models with guards and walnut handles. Does $200 seem kinda high for these knives?

Are you asking where to find more leather sheaths? Ebay lol. Ebay has Ek stuff you just gotta sift through whats Effingham and whats Richmond. And they do sell old Sheaths. As far as I know the optional sheaths only came wiht some knives mostly the older ones, I am actually doin a bit of research in that for myself because most of their sheaths are the "seatbelt" sheaths but I own quite a few older ones with leather sheaths. I have emailed some people about it and will let you know more as I know more.

Err..the Aussi Bowies were a Mike Stewart thing, NOT an Ek thing and the last batch were horrid (late late Effingham production). The Ek 5 is a bowie, that sorta resembles a Strider D9 (well, the Strider sorta resembles the Ek)

"Richmond shop": So these new EK's will be made in the U.S.A. ? That would be a connection to Mr. Ek, who gloried in a product made in America, by Americans, for Americans.

In any event, whatever anyone speculates, hopes, or desires, the quality of the product will speak for itself, and the market will determine if the price is right.

I found the last pre-Effingaham Eks, made in Japan, to be very high quality pieces. At the time, the understanding was that they were 440C, although not marked as such.
