I just recieved my sander last week and was very pleased with it untill today. do date, I have ground 3 knives, all hollow grinds, using this machine. when i started it up today it started trowing the belt, after several atempts to keep the belt on i noticed about 1/2"-3/4" of lateral play in the main arbor. Is this common on this sander? does anyone else have this problem? should I just contact Grizzly and demand they replace it? what to do, what to do???

Dang, and mine is on it's way. I'd give their tech support a call, there may be some adjustment that you can make. Their service so far has been top-notch, the only bad things I've heard are about their quality control. Some people get quality machines, some people get turds. These are old rumors, though. I'd give them a chance.

I'd call or e-mail customer service; I'm sure they'll take care of you. I have a Grizzly machine that was missing a part and they promptly shipped the part, no questions asked, without me returning the whole machine. Their technical support is also really good, if it's something that doesn't require a new part.

One thing I learned about new tools is to make sure everything is nice and tight before you start using it. This holds especially true for your more moderate priced items.

what has happend is the bronze bushings that go on the shaft have wollered there selfs out i had the same problem with mine i cant get it adjusted right, call them and tell them about it and they will send you new ones no at cost the machine is warranted for a year, but if your machine is anything like mine it wont do any good because i cant get it lined up on the shaft so it wont ride on the bearings

Thanks Guys,
DCK8, I just talked to customer service and they told me to ship it back and they would replace it. I told him that i did'nt want to wait for replacement(2month back order)so he told me to send it and they would repair it. H*ll I might as well repair it myself and save myself the greif of repacking and the wait.

Bronze bushings will tend to do this if not properly maintained. Ensure that they are lubricated well and often. It would not hurt if you could have some spare ones on hand, if they will sell them to you. If the shaft gets scored, the bushings will not last any time at all.
I was once told that these bushings did not need to be lubricated, that was poor advice.

Hello,

Do yourselves a favor and Drive those STUPID
bronze bushings out of there!!,,,,,they are not needed for anything at all!

Remember that the end caps on the motor housing is where the Bearing support is,,,not in those stupid bronze bushings, get rid of them and it will run SMOOOOTH,, and no more SHavings all over the place.

I never did figure out why they put them in there when they arent even needed, I drove mine out 5 yrs ago and have Ground just Fine ,,,also very smooth and vibration free i might add.

my .02

You should get one of Ron' videos. It will show you how to set your grinder up and support the arm so it does not move back and forth.--Ray--

Let me see if I understand where these bushings are. Are you saying they are fitted on the shaft (external to the motor). I am guessing they are intended to give additional support to the shaft as it passes through the arm support. If so, it would explain why I am unsure of where the location is as they did not come with my Grizzly.
BTW, I have had mime about five months and no problems.

Just a FYI

I ordered and paid for one of these machines at the begining of DEC.99 They kept saying they will be in in 4-6 weeks. Well it's been over 3 months NO GRINDER! Go figure.
I asked for a refund on 03/01/00 Guess what to date it has not arrived!(03/21/00) Go figure again!
When you ask to speak to someone other than the CLERK on the phone guess what they dont have an answer either. They will only tell you whats on the computer screen. I will bet you this is farmed out phone bank answering service.

Ray:
How would I reach this Ron person?
I am VERY interested in stabalizing the arm on my grizzly.
I threw out my bushings the day after I got the machine (three years ago), and it hasn't been a major problem so far, but I would like to stabalize it just them same.
Any hints anyone would like to give on the forum about this?
Sure would apprecite it.
I plan to get Mr. Blade's videos this summer, as I understand they have lots of helpfull information on them.
Thanks,
Wapiti

Brinze bushings don't tend to last for a long time at high rpm's and side load. There are many different types of needle bearings that might do the job better. The only tricky part is getting the right size. The od of the bearing needs to be a light press fit and the id needs to support the saft with no side play. Take a measurement of the saft and housing and call a bearing co. or look in some supply catalogues. Good luck...

I just got mine last week and I don't have it mounted on anything yet. The table I ordered hasn't came yet.
The belt sander runs smooth as silk and the manual doesn't show any bronze bushings.
Ibelieve that Allen is right and they weren't needed so the cmpany quit putting them in.
I have done a very little bit of grinding with it setting on the floor.
I am amazed that it doesn't move around when it is being used. Of course what I have one hasn't been heavy work as yet.
I have to get some other things out of the way before I can actually put the grinder to full heavy use.

FYI
The newer G1015 Grizzly sanders do not have bushings. In responce to my (and I am sure others) complaints, Grizzly has redesigned the Pivot Arm Bracket (refer to parts list) so that it now bolts directly to the End Bell on the motor. The bushings used to go inside the hole in the Pivot Arm Bracket in an atttempt to stabalize the arm. They are no longer provided with this machine.
Now, before everyone that ownes an old machine rushes to their phones to call Grizzly and order the new Pivot Arm Bracket (# P1015088), be ready for a wait.
Last year I basically designed the same modified part and was going to have it machined but called Grizzly to check if it would work; they told me they had the part already made for $15, so I promtly ordered one. But they were out of stock, "4-6 weeks". That was 2 months ago. They say that the part should be in any time, but they don't know when...
So in the mean time, any good ideas for stabalizing that arm temporarily?
Thanks and good luck to all

Wapiti, Ydduit states that he just got his grinder recently, if it doesn't have the bronze bushings as you say the newer models don't then what could be causing his problem?

Silent,
you know, that is a good question, now that you mention it...
I just passed on what they told me when I talked to their technicians.
Perhaps they sent him one of the old ones...
Hmmmmmm, don't know.
