Hey y'all,
I just wanted to ask how much difference there is between my Bura 10inch NM and a 12 inch AK (other than "about two inches"). Somebody who ordered one of these HAS to have handled a 12, so please let me know how they compare! And yes, I'll probably order a 12AK no matter what people say, but utility reasons will help convince the prettier one in this house that I need my Visa back. :)

The 12" AK will cut, slice, stab, and chop. The Bura New Model will cut, slice, stab, and chop, sort of. Seriously, the 12" AK is not a significantly larger khuk, but it has a very different "feel" to it than the New Model. I'm lucky to have both of them, but if I could only have one it would be the 12" AK.

Sarge

I have both.
If I have time when I get home tonight, I'll do some uneducated comparison/evaluation and post it.;)

Well Sarge, I have officially asked UB to send me the next 12" AK he gets...with a wood handle. I may have a long wait. I don't know why, but I seem to have more of a reverance for wood than horn.

Ben

I'd be all over a wood one myself, Ben. Of course, it looks like you and donut will have to tell me about yours while I wait. :D

Thanks for the reply, Sarge, and I'll look forward to some compare/contrasting from you, donut. Remember, I need to convince more than me! ;)

12" AK by KS (with trisul):
Horn handle length: 3"
Horn handle circumference: 3"
Brass thingy length: 1"
Blade 8" straight (as measured perpendicular from end of brass/parallel to upper spine to line up from tip)
Max Blade thickness (at spine next to brass): 7/16"
Max Blade depth (spine to belly)1 5/8"
OAL: 12"

[ed note: just got busted by my wife while typing this up -- "Oh, you have two little ones now?" ]

10" New Model by LB (with crescent)
Horn handle length: at top 4 3/8" with "pommel" at diagonal so the bottom where your fingers come under is 2 7/8" -- it sounds really small, but it's very ergonomic and fits hands well. There is much less of a pokey top to the tang/pommel to dig into the palm.
Horn handle circumference at brass: 3 3/4" at pommel: 4 1/16"
White metal thingy: 1/2"
Blade: 6 7/8" (straight measure - not really close to accurate as this blade has a much deeper drop than the AK, and the handle has a sort of hanshee curve)
Max blade thickness: 1/4"+ (but <5/16")
Max blade depth: 1 5/8"
OAL: 10 5/8"

I agree with Sarge that the New Model is less "choppy" than the AK -- its balance is farther back and it doesn't feel like it has the same heft. It feels faster with an angle similar to the M43, and as far as self-defense I think I prefer the New Model.

Thank you sir!
If ours are anything to go buy, Bura was pretty consistent when he made these. Mine didn't differ significantly with any of your specs.

From the looks of the other thread, I'd say the Villager 12AK is going to be a reality, so I guess I'll wait for now.

Oh, and I liked your M43 comparison--I've always thought that's what these looked like! :)

Yeah, it IS a great Avatar! I was going to mention it last night when I was looking at threads and I forgot! :)
