this is a PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL THOSE OF YOU WITH NATURAL HANDLED MATERIALS. Don't read this if you want your handles to crack!
I'm posting this because I just saw Stabber's (Public?) Defender thingy in his thread with the natural handles, and I want all of my HOG friends to be happy! NOT crying over a knife with cracked handles or worrying about replacement costs!
Keep them puppies oiled once in a while. I know the guys over in the HI forum use lanolin on the Buffalo horn, but mineral oil works pretty well for me. I've read that once a year works just fine, I've even read that one every 3 years for older knives is okay too. If you're oiling for the first time, you might want to let it sit in a wrapped oiled cloth for a day.
BE ESPECIALLY careful of the Sheep's horn, from what I've read here, it has a pretty bad tendency to shrink and crack. Ask over in the tool shed if you have any more questions, or just ask here, and hopefully others will chime in. I'm not much of an expert on natural handle materials.
