Damn hard work to try and get that 58OT today . . . (140064529063). I wanted it too. It went past my high water mark before I could bid. Did you think that was an Ulster or a Keen Kutter? I didn't recognize that box. Just wondering what you thought the make of that knife was.

I think it was an Ulster from the early 1970s, if I had to name a year I would say 1972. It looks like the old Schrade Old Timer box, or an early version of it. I don't recall the "THE" before "OLD TIMER" on other boxes I have seen, but Codger would probably know.

I just went back to the auction on ebay & saw the questions asked and noticed it doesn't have any tang stamping at all. Hummmmm:confused:

Inconsistencies in tang stampings in this time frame are not uncommon. Goins says Ulster was discontinued in 1972. If you have been following the discussions in this forum you no doubt know that there is no such thing as cut and dried dates, (or rarely), where Albert Baer & Schrade/Ulster/Kingston/Imperial is concerned. I have a bone handled knife, with the OLD TIMER shield, tang stamped ULSTER/U.S.A. without any model number on it. Larry (lrv) & I think it is a 50OT. A pretty unusual Ulster Old Timer.

There are anomalies where Ulster/Kingston/Schrade/Imperial are concerned. But my take on the knife on ebay is that it is an unstamped 58OT, probably made about the time of the change over from Ulster to Schrade, circa late 1972 to early 1973.

PS- I hate it when I get beat be $1

Yeah, but it's also nice to win by 50 cents. I've had a few of those too. That 58 looked really clean. I read an earlier post on this forum there have been some unstamped Keen-Kutter 58 sightings as well, but they mentioned a blade etch. That was a hinged box if you noticed.

I saw that the box was hinged. Codger may know the time frame of the hinged box. There so many unique things about that knife, I think it would be pretty easy to date it. Too bad someone in the forum didn't get it so we could have the fun of dating it with all the unique things about it.

Codger must be out last minute shopping. Anyway, this is the knife we're talking about, when he returns. I copied the jpg in case I won it (or needed to talk about it). There was another photo showing the hinges.
