Two tip torch tip: Sounds like a character in a James Bond movie!!
First: Victor sells a two tip for about $125, after reading my description, this may be the best option. I had two extra tips around so I had no expenses !
My two extra tips are # 3 , I think #2 or even #1 would work out fine! The copper part
of the tip unscrews from the brass mixer, however you may find a goo like sealer makes
disassembly a little difficult. Do it anyway! Saw off about 1 and 1/2 inches of the threaded ends of the copper tips , pick the best threaded end and clean and deburr the chosen. Clean and deburr the two tip ends.
Lay the tips and the threaded end on the bench in the relationship you would like the
finished tip. Mine looks like a big Y with the tips about 1 inch away from each other, and the tips end up pointing up away from the juncture of the Y when you see it, you will know you have it right (right according to Doug anyway!).
You need to tie the three parts together. I used a brass round stock about 1 inch in
diameter and only 3/8ths long. Using my layout on the bench it was easy to determine at what angles I needed to drill holes in the edge of the junction block! I drilled my
intersecting holes first with an 1/8th drill so the three holes meet aprox in the center of the block. I measured the ends of my copper tip parts to determine how much to open each of the three holes to accept the tip parts. I opened my three holes to a depth of about 1/4 inch. Trial assembly time, make any changes now. (I made two blocks before I though I had it right and on the first one I skipped the lay it out on the bench step and my tips were too far apart)
Clean block and tip parts, flux and silver braze the parts together. Dont use soft solder or the silver bearing solder we solder guards on with! Use 45 or 50% silver that melts at abour1200 or more.
Clean the flux off, dry it off, screw your newly made Y into the best of the mixers.
Put you new tip on your torch and play with it!!
When I heat a blade with mine, I hold the blade with the spine in toward the juncture , the spine is inside the Y, and the edge out, The flames are played out toward the edge. Remember the recosso is a heat sink and do the tip of the blade last. With you new two tip, heating goes faster and it is easier than ever to over cook your blade tip!!
This is how I did it, if someone has a better or another way, lay it on us!! I make no claims that this is the best way to heat treat or make the tip for that matter. It works for me and if you like the idea, go for it! Please report in!!
