I was wanting to ask this question to anyone who owns more than one type of rat knife, I work in a lumber mill and did my own bluntruth test with my izula on some kiln dried wood, I cut a 1x4 into and still retained a razor sharp edge! my question is this, do all makes of rat knives have the same edge retention? I understand diffrent knives may have diffrent steel, I was just wondering if they all pretty much hold an edge as good as the izula?

As far as I know, all current RAT's are made of 1095 high carbon steel, fully tempered and with the excellent Rowen heat treat. Edge holding properties (blade geometry aside) should therefore be the same, I think.

Hope this helps..

Thanks,

I own pretty much each and every RC knife that is out as of now and YES, they are all made out of 1095 Carbon and all hold a edge very well.

Yeah all the RAT Cutlery rats are the same.

If you pick up an Ontario rat you may get a good one or a sh**ty one depending on what day it is.

All RATs are equal with full flat grind minus one the RC5 has a Sabre grind, still has great edge retension but cuts slightly different from the others in the RAT Cutlery line up.

I have an Izula and an RC-4 and I have tried cutting through a 2X4 with both. It feels that because the Izula is a bit thinner than the RC-4 it was much easier to cut through the wood, whereas the RC-4 was a little bulkier and more difficult to shave through. At the end of the test, they both held their edges incredibly but the Izula held it better.

I have izula x 2, rc-3, rc-4 and rc-6. They all have good edge retention. They all feel crisp when sharpening them. No complaints here!

I have the RC-4 and it holds an edge well enough. I like 1095 because it is easy to sharpen. I have the HEST on order and will likely get a RC-5. I have the Ontario RAT-7 in both D2 and 1095. No problems with either. If I break one of them I may get a RC-6. Definitely interested in the RC-10.
