Hi,
I'm considering buying a folder for my father's birthday (on July 10, so need recommendation fast!)

I'd like something of good quality in the 100$ range and good looking (considering to have it engraved too).

Should be something modern, no horn handles and the likes. Also, he's an electrician so if at all possible having a blade geometry that he could use on the job would be a plus (skinning cables and the like).

Any recommendation will be appreciated, be it a knife model or just steel/style recommendations

Thanks all

O.

Not a bad idea Tsuba thanks
I'm not so sure about the look though. But I know it't probably one of the best blade shape for his use :/ I guess it's a matter of making a choice over style and usability... A hard one to make for sure!

I know he likes my Shallot (zdp189 composite) and my brother's Laguiole, two models that wouldn't be of much uses for skinning cables and the like

So come to think of it maybe I should consider going with something more classy :p

keep them coming and thanks for you help!

An electrician will find straight edge / wharncliffe blade handy. I recommend Spyderco Centofante 4 or Kershaw Ken Onion Centofante. The Kershaw looks really nice with its DLC coating on stainless scales, which makes it engraveable, but the 440A blade steel is too soft for a premium knife. The Spyderco has FRN / plastic scales, but the VG-10 blade steel is far, far harder and better.

I imagine a good multitool from Spyderco would be useful. Take a look at Spyderco SpyderRench. http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=286

One other knife that I like you too look at is Kershaw Leek G10 with S30V steel. G10 is a very tough synthetic material specified by NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association). It's basically a top grade electrical insulator. I think your dad might get a kick out of the fact that his knife has a top grade electrical insulator as scales.

Orange G-10 spyderco military
Sage II, I think this one would work the best.
BM mini-rukus
These are all a little higher $$ but real good blades.

In your price range,
JYDII composite
BM710
G-10 delica
para-military CPM-D2
Orange G-10 tyrade

What were you thinking about getting him?

Consider getting him a Leatherman Wave. As a workin' man, he might dig it more than a folder.
