Why are all the prices for sold items deleted from the ads? This defeats the ability to confirm fair market values, in my opinion.

Fair market prices? Not trying to be a jerk here (it just comes naturally), but a guy is allowed to ask for whatever he wants, or thinks he can get. If they're selling, then that's fair market pricing. Personally, I'm glad they do delete their prices. Last thing I'd want to hear from someone if I was selling a knife is "Well, someone sold this same knife last week for $20 less, so I think you should sell yours for that price also." My response to such a message would be short, sweet, and dismissive.

There's no rule one way or the other, and it's been discussed many times already.

In short, it's up the seller who listed the item, whether they want to remove the price or not.
One one hand, I'd often like to know how much a knife sold for. Heck, once I had to ask a seller how much money to send because they deleted the price before I even paid for it. ;)
On the other hand, once the sale is completed many sellers consider the price part of a private transaction.

Completed listings on eBay are a better indicator of "fair market value," IMO, because of the volume of sales that take place.

You just made my point for me. If they are selling, then that is fair market value. Not what they're worth, but what someone is willing to pay. However, if they delete the prices, then we don't know what a fair market value is do we? In the real world, if you're afraid to post your prices, then there is usually a reason. But then I see you're not a gold member.

IMO, it's to keep conversations like the following from happening ALL THE TIME...

Asking Price $100

Buyer: I would like to offer $75 for your knife.
Seller: Sorry that is too low.
Buyer: A knife just like your sold last week for $75
Seller: Well, I don't know anything about that knife. Mine may be in much better shape...
Etc....

EDIT: I see "Quiet" posted almost the same thing, I apologize for the redundancy.

Aside from the reasons I listed above, BF For Sale items are a poor indicator of "fair market value" because there is often behind-the-scenes price negotiations, so the listed asking price is often not the final sale price.

Use the Completed Items feature on eBay to see a good indication of "fair market value."

I don't delete the price from my adds. Don't see the reason for it. To each his own

If you want pricing information, check the retail sellers. Then make your judgement on a price and how much you want to sell it. If a knife is available at a retailer, there is little reason for me to buy from a private party at the same price point. I would say... cost less 20% and you'll probably sell the blade. If they are popular and hard to find, retail or normal market price which is still a good price considering that there is no sales tax.

I will say that I seldom look at the for sale forums. I have no interest in selling any of my knives just for the sake of getting rid of them. For me, if I feel that way, they go to the trash.

From my point of view: that practice is very much pointless. Not that leaving the prices for sold items would give some valuable information either. After spending some time on Blade forums and checking for sale section regularly, you should be able pretty much guess what an item is worth.

This is the sellers prerogative to leave or remove the price. We do not want to have more rules than necessary for something so simple.

A lot of sellers remove the prices including me to prevent low balling (It happens) for future selling etc and to be fair to the other people selling.

So we just put them up and adjust the prices as we go if we have too.

The prices can vary.

I really wish sellers would leave the prices up. Especially if it is a custom being sold by a maker. Makes it easy to see what they sell a particular style for. When I look up almost anything, the price is always listed as "$old".

This has been discussed many times already. The answer is already provided in the Exchange rules (Section 3.)

"Sellers can keep or delete the prices in their thread, it is their prerogative."

Nothing new can be said on this subject so I invite anyone interested to search through the rather large pile of previous threads on this topic.
