Since we're located in the country we don't have a lot of services that city folks do. No natural gas, no cable TV, no local phone calling and no broadband internet service. So we have to resort to things like satellite. We have satellite TV from Direct TV and satellite internet from Starband.
I made some changes this weekend as I installed a new server for our network. I connected the satellite modem to an additional network card instead of the USB port and I installed a new browser, Firefox from Mozilla.org. The ethernet connection provides some additiona bandwidth and Firefox has fewer "holes" in it than IE6 and reduces wait times for your access to the satellite.
The difference in performance these two changes made are quite noticeable. Starband isn't up to the performance of other broadband services like cable but it's a whole lot better now than it was last week. The additional network card will cost around $20 and the Firefox is free. So if you're a Starband user, there's a good working tip for you.
