For the pipe smokers out there

With one week left till my students graciously grant me a couple months of respite, I have decided to break my tobacco pipe out of storage and clean it up for what I like to refer as "the smoking season." To be honest, the last time I enjoyed my pipe was around 10 years ago...I have come to the conclusion that what I need is a good traditional pocket knife to serve as a dedicated tobacco pouch knife (because I'm always looking for an excuse to carry another knife). With that said, I am not looking for a knife that contains pipe tools, but rather a traditional model that my grandpa might have used to facilitate his occasional habit. Like always, please share pictures along with explanations as to why you chose the hardware you did.

Thanks in advance! I am looking forward to a slow summer of porch sitting, pipe smoking, and whittling.

When I'm smoking my pipe, I've always used my pocket knife to make my pipe tools. Grab a stick, whittle one end into a tamper and the other end into a flat scraper/scooper/poker.
...although for me, "pipe season" is in the fall, when the air gets crisp.

An Opinel 6 would be very lightweight and small enough to fit in your pouch. Or if you want to go real small you could find a Case Senator.

At home I use my pipe tool sent to me from Jack Black

When I'm out fishing or hiking and such, I use the pen blade on my peanut and like Puukkoman, make a poker if needed, for a tamp I use the butt end of my peanut

Actually for a tool type knife, a case baby doc with spatula blade would be ideal. That said, I like using the case swayback jack or my 2011 BF trad knife.

This is the most useful non-pipe knife for pipers: not only has a spatula, but the butt end is also a great tamper. If you can round the point of the baby doc's blade you'll have the ideal reamer, too. Stay away from pointy blades, which are a sure way to damage your pipe. If you want a fixed blade, Williams-Sonoma sells a clam knife that is ideal for reaming the cake, and it's less than $10.

I've been thinking about getting a dedicated pipe knife as well. Figured out the doc pattern with spatula would make a great tamper and spatula.
Right now I'm using the main blade of my peanut to cut up the flakes and the dull penblade to scoop. But I still need the pipe tool for a spike and tamper.

Would a pipe tool giveaway help you smokers?! :D

I've not been looking for a pipe knife so much as thinking about buying a pipe and taking up pipe smoking lately, so this thread intrigues me. A pipe once or twice a day as a substitute for the pack a day cigarette habit I desperately want/need to give up. A higher quality smoke, and I get to treat myself to a new dedicated knife as a treat for quitting:D

Most definately :D

Also imagine Ken Erickson would make a pipe knife. Like the sportsmans knife he made but with pipe tools. I`d get one.

NoNameNomad: The great thing about pipe smoking is the ritual and the relaxation. Not the intake of nicotin (not that it`s not good as well in moderat doses). I don`t know if it would be a good substitute for smoking cigarretes, but is definately a very nice hobby. I`ve been smoking pipe after i quit cigarettes, but not to substitue for them.

Peterson makes very nice beginner pipes, the Rock of Cashel series for example. So a complete kit would be around 50 bucks. Stay away from those all in one kits and research a bit. Nice bang for the buck are Mr. Brock pipes from Poland but I wouldn`t go for one as a first pipe, but remember that name, Lot`s of variety and very good prices. The difficulty with them for a beginner is that they burn very easy due to being made of Pear wood. Get a nice briar, like a Peterson and smoke away. :)

I'll post one shortly (don't want to hijack this thread anymore - I don't even smoke!)! :D

With great respect to Ken, the prize will be coming from Leeds Market! :D

Looking forward to it. I`ll definately enter. I found the thread you made about them very interesting.

Thanks for all of the great replies so far! I knew y'all would have some knowledge to share. That Buck 319 looks like it would be a nice choice, but i have been drawn to the Doctor's knife for awhile. Maybe I should start the search for one in my price range. For now I have an old peanut that I am using (thanks stich for the suggested use of the butt as a tamping tool). Also, thanks Jack Black for your continued generosity and contributions to this sub forum. It's folks like you that make this place what it is.

Ok. Here's a Case Doctor's knife I use in my pipe related activities. I think the baby Doc is more suitable, but i don't have a pic handy.

My own experience was that, after 20 years of cigarette smoking if I tried to switch back to pipe/cigars I'd either get half way through a stick/bowl and need to light a cig or I'd end up inhaling and smoking all day just like with cigarettes but harsher. I finally quit completely 7 years ago and just recently found that I can enjoy mouth smoking a bowl or stogie once a week or so without cravings. Don't know if it was the time involved or the fact I'm getting old.

Good luck!
